Biocidal Polymer Formulations and Coatings
Polymer Science, Series B, 2021Using key publications, the review analyzes fundamental methods for synthesizing polymer biocides of varying chemical structure and discusses the mechanism behind the effect of the described formulations and their areas of application. High molecular weight compounds with inherent biocidal activity and opportunities for modification of polymers through

Biocidal Potency of Polymers with Bulky Cations
ACS Macro Letters, 2023The performance of antimicrobial polymers depends sensitively on the type of cationic species, charge density, and spatial arrangement of cations. Here we report antimicrobial polymers bearing unusually bulky tetraaminophosphonium groups as the source of highly delocalized cationic charge. The bulky cations drastically enhanced the biocidal activity of

New N-Halamine Biocidal Polymers
Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 1998A new series of N-halamine polymers has been synthesized and tested in granular form, on glass and as fiber substrates for efficacy at inactivating bacteria. Copolymers and grafted copolymers were prepared with 4-(alkyl acryloxymethyl)-4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinones and commercial monomers or polymers.

A novel biocidal styrenetriazinedione polymer
Polymer, 1996Abstract Commercial polystyrene has been modified by chemically attaching 6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dione moieties to it in the para position of the aromatic rings. Chlorination of this novel polymer in aqueous base yielded poly(1,3,5-trichloro-6-methyl-6-(4′-vinylphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dione) which functioned as a biocide against the ...

New Biocidal N-Halamine-PEG Polymers
Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 1998The synthesis and biocidal efficacies of two PEG-N-halamine polymers were reported. The N-halamines are classified as dichlorohydantoins and chloroimidazolidin-4-ones, which were attached to a methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) terminated amine. A 1000 ppm solution of each N-halamine polymer was prepared in water and it was demonstrated that Staphylococcus

Mechanically Switchable Biocide Plasma‐Polymer Coatings for Biomaterials
Advanced Engineering Materials, 2010AbstractSilver nanoparticles are enclosed between two plasma‐polymer layers. We show that the second cross‐linked plasma‐polymer network acts as a barrier and significantly reduces the delivery of the silver nanoparticles into a surrounding aqueous environment.

Preparation of Novel Biocidal N-Halamine Polymers
Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 1995The preparation and biocidal efficacies of eight new N-halamine polymers have been reported. The polymers are in the classes known as dichlorohydantoins, trichlorotriazinediones, and dichloropyrimidinones. They were synthesized from the commercial polymers polystyrene, poly(methyl vinyl ketone), and polymethacrylamide.

Synthesis of Novel N-Halamine Biocidal Polymers
Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 1999Two new water-insoluble polymeric biocides have been synthesized: poly[3-chloro-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-(4'-vinylbenzyl)imidazolidin-4-one] (Poly-p-VBD-Cl) and poly[acrylonitrile-co-(1,3-dichloro-5-methyl-5-(4'-vinylbenzyl)barbituric acid)] (Poly-AN-Barb-Cl).

Biocidal polymers active by contact. V. Synthesis of polysiloxanes with biocidal activity
Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2000Polysiloxanes with 3-(alkyldimethylammonio)propyl pendant groups were synthesized by quaternization of n-octyldimethylamine or n-dodecyldimethylamine with linear polysiloxanes containing 3-chloropropyl groups and/or 3-bromopropyl groups attached to silicon atoms.
