New Biocidal N-Halamine-PEG Polymers

Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 1998
The synthesis and biocidal efficacies of two PEG-N-halamine polymers were reported. The N-halamines are classified as dichlorohydantoins and chloroimidazolidin-4-ones, which were attached to a methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) terminated amine. A 1000 ppm solution of each N-halamine polymer was prepared in water and it was demonstrated that Staphylococcus

Mechanically Switchable Biocide Plasma‐Polymer Coatings for Biomaterials

Advanced Engineering Materials, 2010
AbstractSilver nanoparticles are enclosed between two plasma‐polymer layers. We show that the second cross‐linked plasma‐polymer network acts as a barrier and significantly reduces the delivery of the silver nanoparticles into a surrounding aqueous environment.

Preparation of Novel Biocidal N-Halamine Polymers

Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 1995
The preparation and biocidal efficacies of eight new N-halamine polymers have been reported. The polymers are in the classes known as dichlorohydantoins, trichlorotriazinediones, and dichloropyrimidinones. They were synthesized from the commercial polymers polystyrene, poly(methyl vinyl ketone), and polymethacrylamide.

A new cyclic N-halamine biocidal polymer

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 1994
A new biocidal polymer is described. The compound, poly(1,3-dichloro-5-methyl-5-(4'-vinylphenyl)-hydantoin), is prepared in a three-step synthesis from commercial polystyrene. It is insoluble in water and common organic solvents and acts as a contact biocide for contanainated water or air flowed through it.

Biocidal Activity of Phthalocyanine–Polymer Complexes

2018
The aggregation behavior of iron, manganese, and magnesium phthalocyanine (Pc) with poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone and polyethylene glycol was considered in this chapter. Biocidal activity of iron and manganese Pc complexes with polymer in relation to nine cultures of microorganisms was determined.

Biocide Evaluation Against Sessile Xanthan Polymer-Degrading Bacteria

SPE Reservoir Engineering, 1987
Summary This paper supports the use of formaldehyde at economically feasible concentrations as a biocide for EOR processes that use xanthan biopolymer. Its biocidal action against anaerobic sessile xanthan-degrading field organisms was clearly superior to three other biocides tested when 100% kill was used as the criterion for ...

Biocidal activity of curcumin and cationic polymer possessing composites

Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers, 2020
There is a growing interest in new type of biocidal compounds with antibacterial properties against bacteria. In this study, new antibacterial synthetic materials bearing curcumin and cationic polymers were synthesized. In the synthesis stage, the methacrylate functional cationic monomer was synthesized via the Michael addition route by using 3 ...

Relationship between surface concentration of amphiphilic quaternary ammonium biocides in electrospun polymer fibers and biocidal activity

Reactive and Functional Polymers, 2014
Abstract Electrospinning was utilized to generate antimicrobial Nylon and polycarbonate fibers for potential applications including self-decontaminating fabrics, wound dressings, and filtration media. The effects of quaternary ammonium salt concentration on fiber morphology, diameter, and antimicrobial activity of the resulting fiber mats were ...

Polymer packaging of I2 producing pyrotechnic biocides

Journal of Energetic Materials, 2018
Finding a straightforward counter to infectious biological agents, such as Bacillus anthracis, is of great interest. We have found that a pyrotechnic mixture of iodate salts and aluminum is highly effective at producing heat and elemental iodine, both of which are considered as effective biocides.
