ESTIMATING AND TESTING BIOCONCENTRATION FACTORS

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 2000
Abstract Bioconcentration factors (BCFs) are commonly calculated to represent the equilibrium concentration of a substance in an organism relative to environmental concentrations of the same substance. The BCF is derived from parameters estimated in uptake and elimination experiments and is presented as a single value without error ...

Bioconcentration factors of mercury by Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota procera) [PDF]

open access: possibleEnvironmental Geochemistry and Health, 2008
To examine bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of mercury by Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota procera) roughly similarly sized (a cap diameter) fruiting bodies of this fungus and underlying soil (0-10 cm) samples were collected at 15 sites in Poland between 1995 and 2003.

Bioconcentration Factor Hydrophobicity Cutoff:  An Artificial Phenomenon Reconstructed

Environmental Science & Technology, 2007
The debate on whether highly hydrophobic organic chemicals (with log Kow > 5-6) bioconcentrate less than may be expected from their hydrophobicity is still not settled. The often-observed hydrophobicity "cutoff" might either be explained by artifacts occurring during bioconcentration factor (BCF) measurements or by a true mechanism, i.e., reduced ...

Bioconcentration factors and lipid solubility

Environmental Science & Technology, 1991
The log-log relationship between bioconcentration and hydrophobicity breaks down for several medium and high molecular weight solutes that bioconcentrate either to a small extent or not at all. Much of the failure is attributed to the relatively low solubility of these compounds in lipid.
