Fractal Dynamics of Bioconvective Patterns
Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1991Biologically generated cellular patterns, sometimes called bioconvective patterns, are found to cluster into aggregates which follow fractal growth dynamics akin to diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) models. The pattern formed is self-similar with fractal dimension of 1.66 +/-0.038.

Jamming Bacterial Traffic: Bioconvection
2003Bioconvection is a fascinating pattern forming phenomenon driven by the swimming activity of microbes. There is a common belief that bioconvection has a positive effect on the whole microbial population by aerating deep layers in the suspension. In order to detect such a biological benefit, we performed experiments with several strains of Bacillus ...

"Bioconvection Patterns" in Cultures of Free-Swimming Organisms
Science, 1961The moving polygonal patterns in dense cultures of Tetrahymena and other ciliates and flagellates look like "Benard cells," but are not due to thermal convection. They seem to be due to a similar dynamic instability that occurs when the energy input is internal and mechanical.

Bioconvection due to gyrotactic microbes in a nanofluid flow through a porous medium
Heliyon, 2020Sohail Ahmad

2008
This chapter reviews new developments in bioconvection in a fluid saturated porous medium caused by either gyrotactic or oxytactic microorganisms. Bioconvection arises as a result of an unstable density stratification caused by upswimming microorganisms. This unstable density stratification occurs when the microorganisms, heavier than water, accumulate
