Biocrude suitability for petroleum refineries

open access: yes, 1988
Technologies are now being developed that could produce crude oil from biomass, making available an alternative fuel source as petroleum supplies dwindle and prices rise. If the existing infrastructure for transporting and refining petroleum could be used for biocrude, the transition from petroleum would be smoother and less costly.

Biocrude Oil Production by Integrating Microalgae Polyculture and Wastewater Treatment: Novel Proposal on the Use of Deep Water-Depth Polyculture of Mixotrophic Microalgae

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
Microalgae have attracted significant attention worldwide as one of the most promising feedstock fossil fuel alternatives. However, there are a few challenges for algal fuels to compete with fossil fuels that need to be addressed.

Full characterization of compounds obtained from fractional distillation and upgrading of a HTL biocrude [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Biocrude from hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass provides a sustainable source from which to produce chemicals and fuels. However, just as for fossil crude, the chemical complexity of the biocrude impedes the characterization and hence identification ...

Lignocellulosic materials. A promising hydrothermal route to biorefinery products

open access: yesNext Materials
Hydrothermal conversion (HTC) has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional crude oil. In this study, the hydrothermal liquefaction process of a hybrid herbaceous biomass species (Pennisetum sp) was investigated to understand the most appropriate ...

Towards Bio-Crude Refinery Integration: Hydrodeoxygenation and Co-Hydroprocessing with Light Cycle Oil

open access: yesEnergies
Hydrothermal liquefaction of solid waste has been gaining more and more attention over the last few years. However, the properties of the HTL product, i.e., biocrude, are limiting its direct utilization.

Conversion of Waste to Sustainable Transport Fuel via Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis: Process Modeling and Life Cycle Analysis

open access: yesEnergy Science & Engineering
A lifecycle analysis was performed on a process for distributed forest residue collection and conversion into biocrude, followed by biocrude transport to a central facility and indirect liquefaction using Fischer–Tropsch synthesis with refining to ...

Integrated co-HTL and two-stage extraction of fecal sludge and rice husk toward high-yield middle-to-heavy distillate-rich biocrude

open access: yesFuel Processing Technology
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for converting wet waste into biocrude; however, fecal sludge (FS)-derived biocrude is typically dominated by light fuel fractions, limiting its suitability for middle-distillate and heavy-fuel ...

Feasibility of Thermal Utilization of Primary and Secondary Sludge from a Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kaliningrad City

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of sewage sludge is considered in the article as an analogue of the natural processes of oil formation (catagenesis). A comparison of the physicochemical composition of primary and secondary sludge with type II kerogen ...

Biocrude production by hydrothermal liquefaction of olive residue [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning, 2016
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) converts biomass into a crude bio-oil by thermally and hydrolytically decomposing the biomacromolecules into smaller compounds. The crude bio-oil, or biocrude, is an energy dense product that can potentially be used as a substitute for petroleum crudes.
