Harnessing Activated Sludge for the Treatment of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Wastewater: A Proof‐of‐Concept Study

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 2, February 2026.
Activated sludge cultivation for sewage sludge HTL wastewater treatment was optimized using high temperature incubation, nutrient supplementation, high dilution factor, and overliming pretreatment. Up to 91.2% sCOD removal was achieved, with kinetics analysis confirming enhanced degradation rates under treatment optimization.

Extract Nitrogen-Containing Compounds in Biocrude Oil Converted from Wet Biowaste via Hydrothermal Liquefaction

open access: yes, 2016
This study demonstrates that water can serve as a green solvent to achieve denitrogenation of biocrude oil converted from wet biowaste via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) under previously determined optimal reaction conditions (300 °C with a 1 h reaction

Hydro-liquefaction of Lemna minor (Duckweed) with hydrogen-donor solvent at varying hydrogen pressures

open access: yesInternational Journal of Sustainable Energy, 2022
The authors have investigated hydro-liquefaction of Lemna minor (duckweed) aquatic biomass and a hydrogen-donor solvent, methanol, at temperatures of 180 °C, 200 °C and 220 °C and final reactor pressure values of 70, 80 and 90 bar.

Solvothermal liquefaction of orange peels into biocrude: An experimental investigation of biocrude yield and energy compositional dependency on process variables

open access: yesBioresource Technology
The efficient valorization of biomass for energy-derived biocrudes is essential for effective waste management. However, the production of biocrudes with high energy and reduced oxygen contents during the liquefaction process requires further insight.

Ensiling and Fermentation of Rice Hulls With Ruminal Fluid for Medium‐Chain Carboxylate Production

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 21, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT Large quantities of rice hulls are common at milling sites in Nigeria. They are a by‐product of rice processing and can contribute to environmental degradation if not properly managed. In this study, rice hulls were pretreated by ensiling at ambient temperature and then used as substrate for medium‐chain carboxylates (MCCs) production ...

Enhancing Deoxygenation of a Biopetroleum Model Compound Using Mesoporous Beta Zeolite

open access: yesChemCatChem, Volume 18, Issue 1, 15 January 2026.
Beta zeolite with 13 SAR is modified by alkaline and acidalkaline treatments to generate mesoporosity and improve accessibility of bulky molecules. Characterization confirms enhanced silicon removal and mesopore volume. In catalytic deoxygenation of a lignocellulosic‐derived model compound, treated BEA shows reduced oxygenates, higher hydrocarbon yield,

Low-nitrogen biocrude production using chemical and hydrothermal liquefaction treatment on protein content of Chlorella sorokiniana

open access: yes, 2021
Nitrogen and sulfur content are significantly higher in hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) microalgae biocrude because of the protein of microalgae. At present, the role of protein of microalgae is considerably embarrassed, although protein contribute ...
