The advantages of biodegradable plastics over other types of plastics are their ability to biodegrade at the end of their life. But this additional property is of value only if proper handling of such materials is applied, that is, if they are disposed of under such conditions that enable their biological decomposition.

The use of plastics is increasing gradually, and its degradation is becoming a great threat for society. This chapter raises a question in front of us: Ultimately, how can we balance our needs and safety? Therefore, a term biodegradation is frequently used to explain the ability of microorganism to degrade the organic substance.

In the United States, approximately 25 million tons of plastic household waste is discarded every year (US EPA 1990). Most of this waste ends up in the nation's landfills, where it can remain undegraded for decades or longer. In recent years, concern with a perceived garbage crisis has grown as landfill capacity diminishes and sites for new landfills ...

Biodegradability of degradable plastic waste
Waste Management & Research: The Journal for a Sustainable Circular Economy, 2005Plastic waste constitutes the third largest waste volume in Malaysian municipal solid waste (MSW), next to putrescible waste and paper. The plastic component in MSW from Kuala Lumpur averages 24% (by weight), whereas the national mean is about 15%. The 144 waste dumps in the country receive about 95% of the MSW, including plastic waste.

Biodegradable plastics from renewable sources
Folia Microbiologica, 2003Plastic waste disposal is a huge ecotechnological problem and one of the approaches to solving this problem is the development of biodegradable plastics. This review summarizes data on their use, biodegradability, commercial reliability and production from renewable resources.

Converting Petrochemical Plastic to Biodegradable Plastic
2020Current plastic waste management strategies focus on the prevention and reduction of waste, followed by reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and disposal as the least preferred option. An option that should be included in these strategies is the use of biodegradable counterparts.
