Fiber‐reinforced elastin‐like tubular scaffolds are engineered to achieve anisotropic and reversible actuation under external stimuli. By adjusting fiber's angle, actuation behavior is finely tuned, enabling distinct actuation responses, even within different regions of the same scaffold.

The metabolic pathways and environmental controls of hydrocarbon biodegradation in marine ecosystems
Hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms are ubiquitous in the world's oceans (Head et al., 2006; Yakimov et al., 2007), and biodegradation mediated by indigenous microbial communities is the ultimate fate of the majority of oil hydrocarbon that enters the ...

Biodegradation of Wasted Bioplastics in Natural and Industrial Environments: A Review
The problems linked to plastic wastes have led to the development of biodegradable plastics. More specifically, biodegradable bioplastics are the polymers that are mineralized into carbon dioxide, methane, water, inorganic compounds, or biomass through ...

Poka: A Necro‐Robot Beetle with a Measured Payload Ratio of 6847%
Here, Poka, a necro‐robot beetle with the ability to carry more than 68 times its own weight, is introduced, making it also a walking robot with the highest payload ratio measured to date. This paper is concerned with the design, manufacture and validation of ‘Poka', a novel millimetre‐scale necro‐robot aimed at bridging the performance gap between ...

The private life of environmental bacteria: pollutant biodegradation at the single cell level.
Bacteria display considerable cell-to-cell heterogeneity in a number of genetic and physiological traits. Stochastic differences in regulatory patterns (e.g. at the transcriptional level) propagate into the metabolic and physiological status of otherwise

Predicting the effects of biochar on volatile petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation and emanation from soil: a bacterial community finger-print analysis inferred modelling approach [PDF]
We investigated the response of the dominant bacterial taxa in gravelly sand to the addition of biochar and/or mixtures of volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPHs) using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and sequencing of cut bands.

This study explores machine learning‐driven prediction of fiber length characteristics in sustainable yarn blends made from recycled cotton and Lyocell. By analyzing empirical data through models like Random Forest and Gradient Boosting, and interpreting results with SHAP, key fiber length features from the Staple Diagram and Fibrogram are identified ...

Leaf Electronics: Nature-Based Substrates and Electrodes for Organic Electronic Applications [PDF]
The need to reduce the environmental impact of inorganic electronic systems is pressing. Although the field of organic electronics provides a potential solution to this issue, research and optimization is still majorly carried out on glass or plastic substrates.

Electrical Microneedles for Wound Treatment
A review on state‐of‐art research concerning electrical microneedles applied for wound treatment is presented. After a comprehensive analysis of mechanisms of electrical stimulation on wound healing, the derived three types of electrical microneedles are clarified and summarized. Further, their applications in wound healing are highlighted.
