Three methods for the removal of sulfurfrom dibenzothiophene were evaluated using biocatalytic processes. The methods were a microbial, an enzymatic and a combined one that involves a previous enzymatic oxidation followed by microbial degradation.

Anaerobic biodesulfurization of thiophenes
Distillates from crude oil such as diesel and fuel oil may contain significant amounts of dibenzothiophenes and their alkylated derivatives, containing organically bound sulfur. Combustion of those fossil fuels leads to the release of polluting sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, where it causes 'acid rain'.
