Advances in biotechnology mean that it may soon be possible to recreate previously extinct species. This has led to an emerging debate within bioethics about whether we ought to reintroduce extinct species into our ecosystems. In this paper, we discuss the role that biodiversity could play in this debate.

Grasslands comprise one of Earth's dominant biomes, accounting for up to 40% of its terrestrial area (Figure 1). The fundamental components of grassland habitats are grasses and grass-like plants, but diverse assemblages of other plant life forms and diverse animal communities also contribute to grassland biodiversity.

Biodiversity provides essential services to human societies. Many of these services are provided as public goods, so that they will typically be underprovided both by market mechanisms (because of the impossibility of excluding non-payers from using the services) and by government-run systems (because of the free rider problem).

Biodiversity informatics is an emerging field that applies information management tools to the management and analysis of species-occurrence, taxonomic character, and image data. A wide and growing range of tools is available for both curators and researchers.

Abstract Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented speed and urgent action is needed at all levels. Noting the growing influence of climate change litigation as an emerging legal trend, this volume proposes a sidestep: if climate change litigation is so abundantly commented on, then what can be said about biodiversity litigation?

Biodiversity: luxury or necessity?
Global Environmental Change, 2003Because biodiversity is so complex and varied, knowledge in this area is still relatively limited. It can be stated that this complexity, combined with structural uncertainty, may well lead to an unpredictable future and further loss of biodiversity which will be characterised by non-linearity, thresholds and ...

Hotspots of biodiversity-areas particularly rich in species, rare species, threatened species, or some combination of these attributes-are increasingly being delineated to help set priorities for conservation. Only recently have we begun to test key assumptions that determine how useful a hotspot approach can be for conservation planning.
