The ERRα–VDR axis promotes calcitriol degradation and estrogen signaling in breast cancer cells, while VDR‐CYP24A1‐ERRα overexpression correlates with poor prognosis in patients with basal‐like breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 16, Issue 4, Page 904-920, February 2022., 2022
Our study investigates the molecular effects elicited by the vitamin D derivative calcitriol in patients with breast cancer (BC). We showed that ERRα deregulated calcitriol/VDR‐dependent transcription, causing estrogen pathway activation and upregulation of the calcitriol degradation enzyme CYP24A1.

Angiotensin‐(1‐7) and Alamandine Promote Anti‐inflammatory Response in Macrophages In Vitro and In Vivo

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
The renin‐angiotensin system (RAS) peptides play an important role in inflammation. Resolution of inflammation contributes to restore tissue homeostasis, and it is characterized by neutrophil apoptosis and their subsequent removal by macrophages, which are remarkable plastic cells involved in the pathophysiology of diverse inflammatory diseases ...

Treatment with a Zinc Metalloprotease Purified from Bothrops moojeni Snake Venom (BmooMP‐Alpha‐I) Reduces the Inflammation in an Experimental Model of Dextran Sulfate Sodium‐Induced Colitis

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
It has been described that the metalloprotease BmooMP‐alpha‐I purified from Bothrops moojeni snake venom is able to hydrolyze the TNF molecule. However, this observation has been based mainly on in vitro investigation, in addition to molecular modeling and docking approaches.

A New Platelet‐Aggregation‐Inhibiting Factor Isolated from Bothrops moojeni Snake Venom

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
This work reports the purification and functional characterization of BmooPAi, a platelet‐aggregation‐inhibiting factor from Bothrops moojeni snake venom. The toxin was purified by a combination of three chromatographic steps (ion‐exchange on DEAE‐Sephacel, molecular exclusion on Sephadex G‐75, and affinity chromatography on HiTrap™ Heparin HP ...

Alteration of ROS Homeostasis and Decreased Lifespan in S. cerevisiae Elicited by Deletion of the Mitochondrial Translocator FLX1

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
This paper deals with the control exerted by the mitochondrial translocator FLX1, which catalyzes the movement of the redox cofactor FAD across the mitochondrial membrane, on the efficiency of ATP production, ROS homeostasis, and lifespan of S. cerevisiae.

Rapid Purification of a New P‐I Class Metalloproteinase from Bothrops moojeni Venom with Antiplatelet Activity

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
The present study aimed to evaluate the proteolytic and biological activities of a new metalloproteinase from B. moojeni venom. The purification of BmooMPα‐II was carried out through two chromatographic steps (ion‐exchange and affinity). BmooMPα‐II is a monomeric protein with an apparent molecular mass of 22.5 kDa on SDS‐PAGE 14% under nonreducing ...

Purification and Characterization of BmooAi: A New Toxin from Bothrops moojeni Snake Venom That Inhibits Platelet Aggregation

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
In this paper, we describe the purification/characterization of BmooAi, a new toxin from Bothrops moojeni that inhibits platelet aggregation. The purification of BmooAi was carried out through three chromatographic steps (ion‐exchange on a DEAE‐Sephacel column, molecular exclusion on a Sephadex G‐75 column, and reverse‐phase HPLC chromatography on a C2/

Strychnos pseudoquina and Its Purified Compounds Present an Effective In Vitro Antileishmanial Activity

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
The development of new and cost‐effective alternative therapeutic strategies to treat leishmaniasis has become a high priority. In the present study, the antileishmanial activity of Strychnos pseudoquina St. Hil. was investigated and pure compounds that presented this biological effect were isolated. An ethyl acetate extract was prepared, and it proved

ASPic‐GeneID: A Lightweight Pipeline for Gene Prediction and Alternative Isoforms Detection

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
New genomes are being sequenced at an increasingly rapid rate, far outpacing the rate at which manual gene annotation can be performed. Automated genome annotation is thus necessitated by this growth in genome projects; however, full‐fledged annotation systems are usually home‐grown and customized to a particular genome.

A Regulatory Role of NAD Redox Status on Flavin Cofactor Homeostasis in S. cerevisiae Mitochondria

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) are two redox cofactors of pivotal importance for mitochondrial functionality and cellular redox balance. Despite their relevance, the mechanism by which intramitochondrial NAD(H) and FAD levels are maintained remains quite unclear in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We investigated
