Biogas as fuel for the lowest-level power plants

open access: yesEnergy Storage and Conversion
In the face of European climate policy, the aim of which is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, we are still looking for alternatives to traditional fossil fuels. Apart from the obvious solutions offered by wind and solar energy, it is worth paying attention to a still undeveloped, but potentially developing branch of energy, which is generating ...

Economic and Technical Evaluation of Flexible Power Generation Scenarios for a Biogas Plant

open access: yesJournal of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, 2020
Biogas plants can contribute significantly to the integration of renewable energy sources in the energy system due to their flexible operability. The storability of the energy carrier enables them to generate power in a demand-oriented way and to participate in electricity markets that focus on balancing power supply and demand.

Energy Flexibilization and Demand Response for a Novel Decentralized Power‐to‐Methanol Process

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
This study presents the results of an optimization framework for the scheduling of a Power‐to‐methanol process coupled with an electrolyser, renewable energy sources and a battery. The optimal dynamic operating schedule is computed with different configurations and boundary conditions, showing the advantages of flexible operation.

Beyond hydrogen: Process design of a biogas steam reformer for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
The effect of pressure and steam to carbon ratio on carbon conversion. Abstract We present an analysis of a pilot‐scale multi‐tubular biogas steam reforming reactor, part of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development project in Brazil. The novelty of this work is the application of a new, validated power law kinetic model, specifically developed for

Demand response within the energy-for-water-nexus - A review. ESRI WP637, October 2019 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A promising tool to achieve more flexibility within power systems is demand re-sponse (DR). End-users in many strands of industry have been subject to research up to now regarding the opportunities for implementing DR programmes.

ZeroWasteWater: short-cycling of wastewater resources for sustainable cities of the future [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Sewage treatment relies mainly on conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems, reaching sufficiently low pollutant effluent levels. Yet, CAS has a low cost-effectiveness and recovery potential and a high electricity demand and environmental footprint. By

Economic and environmental implications of the development of UASB reactors in Mexico for sustainable industrial wastewater treatment

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract The objective of this work is to demonstrate that the inclusion of an up‐flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB reactor) within an industrial wastewater treatment plant reduces the plant's investment and operating costs compared to a system based solely on conventional complete‐mix activated sludge (CMAS), operating under the same design principles ...
