Biogas Production: Microbiology and Technology

2016
Biogas, containing energy-rich methane, is produced by microbial decomposition of organic material under anaerobic conditions. Under controlled conditions, this process can be used for the production of energy and a nutrient-rich residue suitable for use as a fertilising agent. The biogas can be used for production of heat, electricity or vehicle fuel.

Extrusion as a pretreatment to increase biogas production

Bioresource Technology, 2011
Application of an extruder to increase the methane yield in a biogas production was examined, and large potential was proved. An extruder was tested on five agricultural biomass types, represented by 13 samples. The samples were analyzed for temperature, maximum particle size, biogas potential, and energy consumption.

Finding disturbances in on-farm biogas production

WORK: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment & Rehabilitation, 2012
When implementing innovations, disturbances are very likely to take place. Disturbances are undesirable because they can lead to unwanted outcomes, such as economic losses and work overload to workers. However, they can be powerful opportunities for learning and re-designing innovations.

Kinetics of biogas production in Anaerobic Filters

Bioresource Technology, 2016
This study investigates methane production kinetics from individual volatile fatty acids (VFA) in an Upflow Anaerobic Filter (AF). 1gCOD in the form of acetic (HAc), propionic (HPr) or butyric acid (HBu) was injected into the AF while operating at an organic loading rate (OLRCOD) of 3.5gL(-1)d(-1).

Feedstocks for Biogas Production: Biogas and Electricity Generation Potentials

2018
The information presented in this chapter outlines the current state of biomass utilization for Anaerobic Digestion (AD) and biogas production, whether through the use of municipal solid waste (MSW), agricultural residues (i.e., manures and field wastes), or downstream residues originating from biomass processing.

Flexible Biogas Production with the ReBi Biogas Plant Configuration for Balancing Power Generation - A Comparison of Flexible Biogas Production with Biogas Storing Configurations

2014
The share of electricity produced from renewable energy is constantly increasing in Germany and worldwide. The transformation to an electricity system based on renewable sources is characterized by an increasing need for balancing power in order to compensate power supply from fluctuating sources, such as solar or wind.

BIOGAS PRODUCTION POTENTIAL IN AGRICULTURE

2012
Generating power from renewable energy resources has become increasingly important in the world. One of the main renewable energy resources is biogas. People have been using biogas for over 200 years. First of all, biogas is a resource of energy that is environment-friendly and manure. In many parts of the world, biogas is used to heat and light homes,

Biogas production: current state and perspectives

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2009
Anaerobic digestion of energy crops, residues, and wastes is of increasing interest in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and to facilitate a sustainable development of energy supply. Production of biogas provides a versatile carrier of renewable energy, as methane can be used for replacement of fossil fuels in both heat and power generation ...

Significance of Biogas Production in Waste Tips

Waste Management & Research: The Journal for a Sustainable Circular Economy, 1983
In a waste tip methane fermentation should be promoted as much as possible in order to minimize contamination of leachate and groundwater. In this paper the production of biogas is mathematically described as a first-order process. The degradable organic fraction of municipal refuse is subdivided into three fractions with different half-lifes (1,5 and ...
