Control of Competitive Bioinvasion
2013The invasion of alien and displacement of indigenous species is a crucial ecological and economical problem of even increasing significance. Measures to control and perhaps to stop and reverse such invasive processes are urgently needed. Mathematical models are a suitable tool to preview the impact of control measures before utilizing them in nature ...

Enhancing passive sampling tools for detecting marine bioinvasions
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2018Early detection is important for successful management of invasive species, but optimising monitoring systems to detect multiple species from different taxonomic groups remains a major challenge. Settlement plates are often used to monitor non-indigenous marine species (NIMS) associated with vessel biofouling, but there have been few assessments of ...

Genetics of marine bioinvasions
Hydrobiologia, 2000Anthropogenic biological introductions have captured the attention of marine scientists and resource managers in recent years. Human-mediated marine bioinvasions are presently acknowledged as often ecologically and financially devastating events. Despite recent increases in scientific interest and financial resources devoted to nonindigenous nuisance ...

Bioinvasions and Globalization
2009Abstract Bioinvasions and Globalization synthesises our current knowledge of the ecology and economics of biological invasions, providing an in-depth evaluation of the science and its implications for managing the causes and consequences of one of the most pressing environmental issues facing humanity today.

Metamorphoses: Bioinvasions in the Mediterranean Sea
2013Six hundred and eighty alien marine multicellular species have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, with many establishing viable populations and dispersing along its coastline. A brief history of bioinvasions research in the Mediterranean Sea is presented.

Bioinvasions in macrozoobenthos of the Volgograd Reservoir
Russian Journal of Ecology, 2008On the basis of long-term monitoring of macrozoobenthos in the Volgograd Reservoir, the causes of changes in its species composition were analyzed and invading species were identified. During the first 20–25 years after construction of the reservoir, invading species appeared at a rate of 0.4 species per year.

The risk of marine bioinvasion caused by global shipping
Ecology Letters, 2013Abstract The rate of biological invasions has strongly increased during the last decades, mostly due to the accelerated spread of species by increasing global trade and transport. Here, we combine the network of global cargo ship movements with port environmental conditions and biogeography to quantify the probability of new primary ...

International collaboration on marine bioinvasions – The ICES response
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2007The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) noted the risks associated with uncontrolled species introductions and transfers more than 40 years ago and launched two working groups to address the issue, i.e. the ICES Working Group on Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms (WGITMO) to deal with the movement of non-indigenous ...
