Marine Bioinvasions in Australia

2008
Australia has been a regular port of call for ocean going vessels since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and the first records of non-native species followed soon after (Table 25.1). However, it has taken over one hundred years and several prominent invasions by demonstrably harmful species, for marine invasions to attract significant ...

Genetics of marine bioinvasions

Hydrobiologia, 2000
Anthropogenic biological introductions have captured the attention of marine scientists and resource managers in recent years. Human-mediated marine bioinvasions are presently acknowledged as often ecologically and financially devastating events. Despite recent increases in scientific interest and financial resources devoted to nonindigenous nuisance ...

Bioinvasions in macrozoobenthos of the Volgograd Reservoir

Russian Journal of Ecology, 2008
On the basis of long-term monitoring of macrozoobenthos in the Volgograd Reservoir, the causes of changes in its species composition were analyzed and invading species were identified. During the first 20–25 years after construction of the reservoir, invading species appeared at a rate of 0.4 species per year.

Control of Competitive Bioinvasion

2013
The invasion of alien and displacement of indigenous species is a crucial ecological and economical problem of even increasing significance. Measures to control and perhaps to stop and reverse such invasive processes are urgently needed. Mathematical models are a suitable tool to preview the impact of control measures before utilizing them in nature ...

A general eco-evolutionary framework for understanding bioinvasions

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2006
Studies of bioinvasions have revealed various strategies of invasion, depending on the ecosystem invaded and the alien species concerned. Here, we consider how migration (as a demographic factor), as well as ecological and evolutionary changes, affect invasion success.

Truth and consequences: the bioinvasion of the Mediterranean Sea

Integrative Zoology, 2012
AbstractOver 660 alien marine multicellular species have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, with many establishing viable populations and subsequently dispersing from their points of entry. A brief overview is presented of the current state of knowledge of bioinvasions in the Mediterranean Sea, with particular attention paid to gelatinous invasive

Metamorphoses: Bioinvasions in the Mediterranean Sea

2013
Six hundred and eighty alien marine multicellular species have been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, with many establishing viable populations and dispersing along its coastline. A brief history of bioinvasions research in the Mediterranean Sea is presented.
