Process benefits of ozone/BAC as pretreatment to membrane-based advanced treatment for direct potable reuse

open access: yesWater Reuse
The state of California, USA, has developed regulations for projects that want to pursue direct potable reuse. One of the most significant requirements is that the treatment train must include ozone and biological activated carbon (ozone/BAC) as ...

Dissecting the genetic basis of drought escape across multiple traits in colonizing Arabidopsis thaliana lineages

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Cape Verde Islandspopulations experience seasonal drought and high humidity during the growing season, driving drought escape strategies relative to their Moroccan outgroup. Summary Drought response in plants is complex, involving integration across a range of physiological processes.

Locomotor muscle dysfunction and rehabilitative exercise training in fibrotic interstitial lung disease: Where are we at and where could we go?

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Exercise limitation is a cardinal feature of fibrotic interstitial lung disease arising from pulmonary gas exchange, respiratory mechanical and cardio‐circulatory abnormalities. More recently, it has been recognized that impairment in locomotor muscle function (e.g., reduced muscle mass/strength or heightened fatigability) might also play a ...

Diversity and functional capabilities of the microbial metagenome in a potable water reuse system

open access: yesDesalination and Water Treatment
The direct and indirect potable reuse of wastewater has recently gained significant attention in water scarce regions globally. Some advanced treatment facilities utilize ozone and biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration to remove persistent low ...

Dissolved Organic Matter and Pretreatment Effects on PFAS Removal by Granular Activated Carbon

open access: yesAWWA Water Science, Volume 8, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption is commonly used to remove per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. In this study, we evaluated the impact of dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration and pretreatment on GAC use rates for PFAS removal.

Phytoremediation of Wastewater From Oil Well Drilling: Potential of Different Plant Species

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 5, May 2026.
Purple fountain grass (Cenchrus setaceus “Rubrum”) is a promising plant for using in constructed wetlands treating complex oil drilling effluents. ABSTRACT This study evaluated the removal of contaminants present in wastewater from oil well drilling in the presence of three plant species: water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), cattail (Typha ...

Engineered GM1 Intersects Between Mitochondrial and Synaptic Pathways to Ameliorate ALS Pathology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 20, 9 April 2026.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease driven by genetic and molecular disruptions affecting energy balance, protein homeostasis, and stress responses in nerve cells. Studies using human and rodent models identified convergent defects in mitochondria and synaptic function.

Investigation of Decolorization of Textile Wastewater in an Anaerobic/Aerobic Biological Activated Carbon System (A/A BAC)

open access: yesPakistan Journal of Biological Sciences, 2010
The aim of this study is to investigate the decolorization in anaerobic/aerobic biological activated carbon (A/A BAC) system. The experiment was divided into 2 stages; stage I is batch test for preliminary study of dye removal equilibrium time. The preliminary experiment (stage I) provided the optimal data for experimental design of A/A BAC system in ...

Redox‐Responsive Polymeric Nanocapsules for Enhanced Tumor‐Targeted Delivery of Antimicrobial Peptides

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 24, 27 April 2026.
This study presents a modular redox‐responsive nanocapsule platform that enables enhanced tumor‐targeted delivery of antimicrobial peptides. Using melittin as an example, the system achieves controlled activation within the tumor microenvironment, improving intratumoral accumulation while minimizing systemic toxicity.

Systemic Consequences of Chronic Ethanol Intake: From Microbiome Shifts to Metabolic Impairment

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 2, April 2026.
Chronic ethanol intake disrupts whole‐body homeostasis by reducing energy intake and body mass, impairing physical function, and reshaping the gut microbiome. Microbiota shifts and depletion of short‐chain fatty acids increase gut permeability and drive hepatic inflammation, dyslipidemia, and glucose intolerance.
