From passive to informed: mechanical mechanisms of seed dispersal.

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2019
Plant dispersal mechanisms rely on anatomical and morphological adaptations for the use of physical or biological dispersal vectors. Recently, studies of interactions between the dispersal unit and physical environment have uncovered fluid dynamic ...

Consolidate Overview of Ribonucleic Acid Molecular Dynamics: From Molecular Movements to Material Innovations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Molecular dynamics simulations are advancing the study of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and RNA‐conjugated molecules. These developments include improvements in force fields, long‐timescale dynamics, and coarse‐grained models, addressing limitations and refining methods.

Agent-Based Spatial Dynamic Modeling of Diatraea saccharalis and the Natural Parasites Cotesia flavipes and Trichogramma galloi in Sugarcane Crops

open access: yesRemote Sensing
In recent years, sugarcane production areas in Brazil have experienced a slower evolution in productivity, and one of the reasons for this is related to the increase in phytosanitary problems, such as the presence of pests.

Fluorinated Graphene‐Coated N95 Respirators for Enhanced Protection against Viral Accumulation and Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a one‐step spray coating approach to coat the fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheet onto the N95 respirators. The spray‐coated superhydrophobic N95 respirators can effectively repel respiratory droplets off instantaneously and prevent SARS‐CoV‐2 virus accumulation on the surface.

Dispersal syndromes in the largest protection area of the Atlantic Forest in the state of Paraiba, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesBiotemas, 2013
The diaspore dispersal process is crucial for plant reproduction, since the diaspores must reach a suitable site to germinate. This paper aimed to study morphological aspects of diaspores and determine the dispersal syndromes of species occurring in the ...

Long-distance wind-dispersal of spores in a fungal plant pathogen: estimation of anisotropic dispersal kernels from an extensive field experiment.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Given its biological significance, determining the dispersal kernel (i.e., the distribution of dispersal distances) of spore-producing pathogens is essential. Here, we report two field experiments designed to measure disease gradients caused by sexually-

Femtosecond Single‐ and Double‐Pulse Fabrication of Periodic Nanostructures on Stainless Steel for Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Periodic submicron features are fabricated on 304 stainless steel using single and double femtosecond laser pulses. By adjusting polarization, fluence, and inter‐pulse delay, 1D and 2D nanostructures are formed. Enhanced hydrophobicity and dense surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy hotspots enable analyte detection down to 10−10 M with good ...

Larval dispersal in a changing ocean with an emphasis on upwelling regions

open access: yesEcosphere, 2020
Dispersal of benthic species in the sea is mediated primarily through small, vulnerable larvae that must survive minutes to months as members of the plankton community while being transported by strong, dynamic currents.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL OXIDATION OF DISPERSED OIL IN SEAWATER

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1988
With an understanding of the different physical, chemical and biological weathering processes, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to describe biological and chemical oxidation processes at realistically low concentrations of physically and chemically dispersed oil in seawater by incubating living and sterilized samples spiked with oil ...

Tribology of ZrC Coatings and Spherical Tips Acquired with Extraordinarily Stiff, Metal Atomic Force Microscopy Probes

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this research, ZrC coatings are evaluated against various counterprobes at the microscale using novel super‐stiff atomic force microscopy cantilevers. The chemical composition of the coating is shown to be an important factor influencing coating hardness and Young's modulus, while surface roughness, counterprobe hardness, and surface energy are the ...
