Biological nitrification inhibition compromises the soil methane sink
Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) is a plant-mediated process that suppresses nitrification and is widely considered beneficial for reducing nitrous oxide emissions. Here, we show that BNI compounds also inhibit methane oxidation by methanotrophic bacteria, revealing a previously unrecognized trade-off in greenhouse gas regulation.Seongmin Yang +13 more

Investigating biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) mechanisms in perennial ryegrass *
Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) has been observed in different perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) accessions including elite cultivars. Preliminary data indicate there are variations in the capacity of perennial ryegrass populations to inhibit nitrification and nitrous oxide emissions, with variations existing both between and within ...Chibuike, Grace +3 more

Biological nitrification: heavy metal inhibition and biomass adsorption
2004The present work deals with an experimentation performed in batch reactors to evaluate copper inhibition in the biological nitrification process. The inhibition was measured both directly, through AUR (ammonia uptake rate) measurement and indirectly, through sOUR (specific oxygen uptake rate) tests. Results show that, due to the essential role of small

Initial profiling of Biological Nitrification Inhibition in New Zealand’s elite ryegrass cultivars
Proven in temperate crops and tropical pastures, Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI) may offer a natural plant-mediated means to combat N2O emissions in grazed temperate livestock systems. Herein we report initial investigation into BNI using a broad set of New Zealand’s elite ryegrass genetics in a standard hydroponic bioassay, concluding a 12 ...Barrett, Brent +6 more
