Ion pumping in biological membranes

Contemporary Physics, 1985
Abstract Biological cells need to maintain their internal composition different from that outside them. This is done by ion pumps which are proteins embedded in the membrane surrounding the cells. Ion pumps are found throughout the animal kingdom including bacteria.

When the Biological Pump is Perturbed

German Research, 2005
AbstractThroughout the world, there are about 45,000 dams interrupting the natural flow of water to the oceans.

The Biological Pump

2007
Book's abstract: The oceans are vitally important to an understanding of how the Earth works as an integrated system because its chemical composition records transfer of elements through the Earth’s geochemical reservoirs as well as defining how physical, biological and chemical processes combine to influence issues as diverse as climate change and the

Modelling the Response of the Biological Pump to Climate Change

2004
The concentrations of so-called “greenhouse” gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and halocarbons and other halogenated compounds, are increasing in the atmosphere mainly due to human activities. These gases trap outgoing radiation from the Earth’s surface, causing a warming of the lower atmosphere.

The Biological Carbon Pump in the North Atlantic

Progress in Oceanography, 2014
Mediated principally by the sinking of organic rich particles from the upper ocean, the Biological Carbon Pump (BCP) is a significant component of the global carbon cycle. It transfers roughly 11GtCyr-1 into the ocean's interior and maintains atmospheric carbon dioxide at significantly lower levels than would be the case if it did not exist.

The Biological Pump in Island-Induced Eddies

1992
Eddies are important not only because they may store and transport large amounts of energy or alter the mesoscale circulation of an area, but because they may accelerate the vertical transport of carbon through the water column.

Biological Considerations of Pumped Storage Development

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1976
The decision to build pumped storage projects must be made with the knowledge that there will be changes in the environment. Many of the biological considerations of pumped storage are quite similar to those of the more conventional types of reservoir development and operations. There are special considerations which deserve the attention of workers in

[Utilization of aortomyoplasty as a biological pumping system].

Archives des maladies du coeur et des vaisseaux, 2000
Aortomyoplasty is a surgical technique of constructing a neo-ventricle on the ascending or descending aorta with the latissimus dorsi muscle. This is electrically stimulated to contract during diastole, thereby creating a system of chronic, haemo-compatible aortic pumping.
