The aim of this short chapter is to remind the reader that, as everywhere else in biomedical research, specimens may be biohazardous. Appropriate measures are necessary to protect the operating personnel and environment. Routine safety precautions are sufficient for “closed” systems such as PAS, PROFILE, FACScan, FACStrak and FACSCalibur.

Health laboratory science, 1978The Washington State Public Health Laboratories has devised a metho to capture and remove aerosols produced during centrifugation. The method to adapt any centrifuge having an enclosed chamber with an air intake hole in the lid, and an exhaust hole in the bottom of the chamber, is discussed.
