Lake Baikal is possibly the world's most remarkable freshwater lake (Figs1-3). It is certainly the largest in volume (23,000 km³), the deepest(maximum depth is 1632 m) and probably the most ancient.Nevertheless, from a biological point of view its ...

Tradeoffs in adapting biological systems
Biological systems must sense and adapt to changes in their environment. Molecular networks capable of such adaptation belong to two well-known classes, feed-forward and feedback structures, but the fundamental limitations and tradeoffs of these two classes remain unknown.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Foraging flight distances of wintering ducks and geese: a review
The distance covered by foraging animals, especially those that radiate from a central area when foraging, may affect ecosystem, community, and population dynamics, and has conservation and landscape planning implications for multiple taxa, including ...

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Freshwater biological research in Mexico; A brief historical review
The first notice of freshwater biological observations carried out inMexico is contained in the ancient nahuatl codexes. In these, freshwaterfishes, waterfowl and aquatic insects are depicted, showing capturemethods, techniques and limnological ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.
