Biological warfare: a challenge for humanity

open access: yesArchivo Médico de Camagüey, 2018
Background: the control of transmittable diseases contributes to the illegitimate use of biological agents, initially for war or criminal purposes and currently for terrorist purposes. Objective: to describe the problem of the use of biological weapons,

Enhancing institutional fit without formal institutional change: farmer-practitioner relationships and agricultural conservation programs in the Chesapeake Bay, USA

open access: yesEcology and Society
Restoring agricultural watersheds often involves incentivizing private landowners to adopt conservation practices that have high public benefits but low or uncertain private benefits for farmers.

Embracing Complexity in HRM Research: A Call for System and Process Perspectives

open access: yesHuman Resource Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Human resource management (HRM) is inherently complex. It involves systems of principles, practices, and activities operating at individual, group, organizational, and macro levels, which are interlinked through complex processes. Yet, empirical research has not kept pace with this conceptual richness.

Biological warfare: the history of microbial pathogens, biotoxins and emerging threats [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Australia, 2020
Bioterrorism is the deliberate misuse of a pathogen (virus, bacterium or other disease-causing microorganisms) or biotoxin (poisonous substance produced by an organism) to cause illness and death amongst the population.

Biodiversity as a Dominant Force in Shaping Ethnic Music Styles 生物多样性:塑造民族音乐风格的主导力量

open access: yesIntegrative Conservation, EarlyView.
Our findings show that plant, bird, and mammal diversity considerably shape musical features such as vocal range and ornamental sounds, more so than geography or lifestyle. Our study provides the first empirical evidence linking biodiversity to ethnic music styles. Protecting biodiversity, the musical and cultural will be protected.

Peri‐implant disease pathogenesis animal models: Consensus report of Workgroup 1 of the IADR Implantology Research Group Best Evidence Consensus Symposium on Peri‐Implant Disease and Its Treatment

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The pathogenesis and etiology of peri‐implantitis demand a deeper understanding to lead to successful treatment modalities. Animal models of peri‐implantitis pathogenesis offer unique insights but their translational impact requires consideration of implant biomaterials science.

High‐pressure homogenization and pH‐shifting modification of hazelnut protein isolates: Functional enhancement, allergenicity reduction, and probiotic microencapsulation performance

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Plant‐based proteins, such as hazelnut protein isolates (HPIs), often exhibit limited solubility and functionality, as well as allergenic potential, thereby limiting their applicability in food products. This investigation sought to improve the techno‐functional characteristics of HPI and mitigate its allergenicity via high‐pressure

Veterans’ positive parenting practices and satisfaction over time: Examining the impact of moral injury, posttraumatic stress, and internalizing symptoms

open access: yesJournal of Traumatic Stress, EarlyView.
Abstract Little is known about the association between moral injury (MI) and parenting. Although there is evidence that psychological symptoms impact veterans’ parenting, few longitudinal studies exist. The current study used parallel process latent growth curve models to explore the effects of MI and other psychological symptoms on positive parenting ...

Bacteriologic and Genomic Investigation of Bacillus anthracis Isolated from World War II Site, China

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases
Records suggest Bacillus anthracis was used in biowarfare during World War II, but evidence remains limited. We isolated B. anthracis from soil at the remains of a World War II–era laboratory in China.
