The Adaptive Significance of Tail‐Flagging: A Test in European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.European rabbits use their white tails to warn others of danger and ward off predators, revealing the dual function of a single animal signalling behaviour. Using both field observations and phylogenetic analyses, we show that tail‐flagging may alarm other rabbits before escape and deter predators during escape.
