CellProfiler 3.0: Next-generation image processing for biology

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2018
CellProfiler has enabled the scientific research community to create flexible, modular image analysis pipelines since its release in 2005. Here, we describe CellProfiler 3.0, a new version of the software supporting both whole-volume and plane-wise ...

The Waiting And Mating Game: Condition Dependent Mate Sampling In Female Gray Treefrogs (Hyla Versicolor) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Strong sexual selection by receivers can lead to the evolution of elaborate courtship behaviors in signalers. However the process by which receivers sample signalers and execute mate choice under complex signaling conditions—and thus the realized ...

Genes Classical And Genes Developmental: The Different Uses Of The Gene In Evolutionary Synthesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Dobzhansky (1964) stated that “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution,” and the function of the gene is no exception. The use of genes in population genetics and developmental genetics differs significantly.

Cyclic nucleotide signaling as a drug target in retinitis pigmentosa

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Disruptions in cGMP and cAMP signaling can contribute to retinal dysfunction and photoreceptor loss in retinitis pigmentosa. This perspective examines the mechanisms and evaluates emerging evidence on targeting these pathways as a potential therapeutic strategy to slow or prevent retinal degeneration.

Chord Biology

open access: yes, 2016
Humans observe two forms of life: chords (quantum spectrum, meritans, etc.) and organisms (cells, molecules, etc.), respectively from chord (tonal) observers (self-observers) and non-chord (atonal) observers (external observers), life contains chords, and organisms exist on two levels.

TRAF2 binds to TIFA via a novel motif and contributes to its autophagic degradation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
TRAF family members couple receptor signalling complexes to downstream outputs, but how they interact with these complexes is not always clear. Here, we show that during ADP‐heptose signalling, TRAF2 binding to TIFA requires two short sequence motifs in the C‐terminal tail of TIFA, which are distinct from the TRAF6 binding motif.

Magnesium biology [PDF]

open access: yesNephrology Dialysis Transplantation
ABSTRACT Magnesium (Mg2+) is essential for energy metabolism, muscle contraction and neurotransmission. As part of the Mg–ATP complex, it is involved in over 600 enzymatic reactions. Serum Mg2+ levels are tightly regulated between 0.7 and 1.1 mmol/L by interplay of intestinal absorption and renal excretion.

The RootScope: A Simple High-Throughput Screening System For Quantitating Gene Expression Dynamics In Plant Roots [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background: High temperature stress responses are vital for plant survival. The mechanisms that plants use to sense high temperatures are only partially understood and involve multiple sensing and signaling pathways.
