Deforestation-free land-use change and organic matter-centered management improve the C footprint of oil palm expansion. [PDF]
Alternative land‐use changes like degraded savannas conversion holds potential to replace tropical deforestation and its pernicious effect on ecosystem aspects. However, lack of empirical evidence hinders the understanding of the impacts of such alternative pathway for sustainable agricultural development on important ecosystem processes. Here, we show

Ectomycorrhizal fungi and the nitrogen economy of Nothofagus in southern Patagonia. [PDF]
Ectomycorrhizal fungi play essential roles in nitrogen cycling and plant nutrient uptake at high latitudes. However, they have disproportionately been studied in boreal forests dominated by evergreen conifers. We characterized ectomycorrhizal associations and the nitrogen economy of co‐occurring deciduous and evergreen angiosperms from the genus ...

No home‐field advantage in litter decomposition from the desert to temperate forest
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Litter decomposition rates are determined by the interplay of climate, decomposer organisms and litter quality. It has been suggested that the decomposer community may be locally adapted to litter quality, providing a home‐field advantage (HFA) resulting in accelerated ...

We identified 83 published paired studies that reported data on microbial biomass, abundance, composition, and enzyme activity under representative land‐use changes in the tropics. We found that microbial biomass, abundance, and functions were affected by land‐use change.

Abstract Tropical montane forests in the Andes are subjected to deforestation and subsequent transformation into pastures. Abandoned pastures are frequently reforested by planting monoculture timber plantations, resulting in reduced aboveground diversity and changes in soil characteristics compared to primary forests.

Soil respiration was evaluated by quantifying CO2 and carbon from microbial biomass (CBM) in a livestock production system that integrates different land uses, located south-east of the municipality of Pasto. The evaluated uses correspond to secondary forest, prairie and silvopastoral system (Ssp), at two depths (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm).
