Assessing the ecological status of Italian lagoons using a biomass-based index

open access: yesMarine Pollution Bulletin, 2018
We compared the performance of abundance- and biomass-based M-AMBI in the 13 major Italian lagoons, using a benthic dataset constituted by 208 sampling sites. The relative importance of ecological groups changed when using abundance or biomass, sometimes leading to an improved ecological status classification.

TCMD: A High‐Throughput and Rapid Method for Screening Antimicrobial Ingredients from Renewable Bio‐Based Resources

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study develops a strategy to screen the active compounds from bio‐mixtures via combining transcriptomic profiling and molecular docking. The proposed method demonstrates 100% correction in three different biobased mixtures and is 3–20 times faster than traditional approaches.

A solution for reducing high bias in estimates of stored carbon in tropical forests (aboveground biomass) [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
A nondestructive method for estimating the amount of carbon stored by individuals, communities, vegetation types, and coverages, as well as their volume and aboveground biomass, is presented. This methodology is based on information on carbon stocks obtained through three-dimensional analysis of tree architecture and artificial neural networks.

Exploring the invasion of rangelands by Acacia mearnsii (black wattle): biophysical characteristics and management implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Australian acacias have spread to many parts of the world. In South Africa, species such as A. mearnsii and A. dealbata are invasive. Consequently, more effort has focused on their clearing.

Genomic Variation Underpins Genetic Divergence and Differing Salt Resilience in Sesbania bispinosa

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sesbania, a leguminous halophyte, thrives in saline soils. Comparative genomics reveals key genomic variations—particularly chromosomal inversions—are identified as contributors to population differentiation and salt resilience. These findings advance the understanding of genomic variation driving evolution and phenotypic differentiation and offer ...

Habitat connectivity in reef fish communities and marine reserve design in Old Providence-Santa Catalina, Colombia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
On the insular platform of Old Providence/Santa Catalina, Colombia, we compared nearshore lagoonal patch reefs to those on the northern bank distant from the islands to determine the importance of habitat connectivity to fish community structure ...

Targeted Intervention Strategies for Maternal–Offspring Transmission of Christensenellaceae in Pigs via a Deep Learning Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study deciphers maternal‐driven microbial transmission in pigs using a deep learning model (maternal–offspring microbial transmission model), identifying Christensenellaceae R‐7 group as a key transmitted taxon. Filtered galacto‐oligosaccharides‐targeted Christensenellaceae R‐7 group alters offspring microbial functions via maternal ...

Statistical methods for estimating ecological breakpoints and prediction intervals [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The relationships among ecological variables are usually obtained by fitting statistical models that go through the conditional means of the dependent variables. For example, the nonparametric loess and the parametric piecewise linear regression models, which pass through the conditional mean of the response variable given the predictor, are used to ...
