Sustainable Plant‐Based Water Repellent Coatings Using Hydrophobic Pine and Palm Pollen

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A novel formulation strategy for creating superhydrophobic coatings using plant‐derived waxes and chemically treated pine and palm pollen. By employing acid modification, the hydrophobicity of the pollen surface is enhanced, resulting in water contact angles exceeding 150°.

Energy from Biomass for Conversion of Biomass

open access: yesLatvian Journal of Physics and Technical Sciences, 2009
Along with estimates of minimum energy required by steam explosion pretreatment of biomass some general problems concerning biomass conversion into chemicals, materials, and fuels are discussed. The energy necessary for processing biomass by steam explosion auto-hydrolysis is compared with the heat content of wood and calculated in terms of the amount ...

Wood‐Derived Nanocellulose‐Biocarbon Fresnel‐Zone Plate Lenses for Sub‐THz Frequency Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Wood‐derived nanocellulose and lignin‐based biocarbon were combined to fabricate fully bio‐based Fresnel zone plate (FZP) lenses for sub‐terahertz frequencies. These sustainable FZP lenses exhibit low dielectric loss and high directivity, achieving performance comparable to that of metallic references, and remain functional under environmental stress ...

Heterolytic H2 activation over platinum supported on oxygen‑vacancy‑rich CeO2 (Pt/CeO2–Vo) for efficient reductive amination of levulinic acid to pyrrolidones under ambient conditions

open access: yesJournal of Bioresources and Bioproducts
Reductive amination of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) to N-substituted-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (BMP), versatile nitrogen-containing chemicals, under ambient conditions is highly desirable but challenging due to inefficient H2 activation.

Biomass for Energy

open access: yesEnergy Studies Review, 1989
This paper provides a broad overview of the use of plant material as a source of usable energy. The problem of gathering and interpreting data on the use of biomass is discussed. From the limited data available it is inferred that bio energy contributes about 15% of the global energy budget.

Machine Learning for Green Solvents: Assessment, Selection and Substitution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Environmental regulations have intensified demand for green solvents, but discovery is limited by Solvent Selection Guides (SSGs) that quantify solvent sustainability. Training a machine learning model on GlaxoSmithKline SSG, a database of sustainability metrics for 10,189 solvents, GreenSolventDB is developed. Integrated with Hansen solubility metrics,
