Effects of exogenous tissue‐nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) were analyzed in the Hyp mouse model of X‐linked hypophosphatemia (XLH). Maxillary first molars were extracted from wild‐type (WT) and Hyp mice at 6 weeks, and collagen gel ± TNAP was placed in sockets. In one group of Hyp mice, submucosal injections of TNAP or saline were delivered at

Iron Sulfides Produced by Thermococcales: An Iron Detoxification Mechanism. [PDF]
Thermococcales, archaea from hydrothermal vents, promote iron sulfide precipitation, enabling survival in iron‐rich environments. Some cells become encrusted in pyrite and do not survive mineralization, while surviving cells activate metal detoxification genes. This biomineralization process allows the population to withstand toxic iron concentrations,

Morphological and biomechanical adaptations of larval mandibles in Trichoptera (Insecta)
Mandible morphology differs between predators and grazers: predators show pointed incisors, grazers sharp edges and setae. Mechanical properties depend on cuticle tanning, not elemental reinforcement. Functional mandible types reflect feeding strategies, with predators specialized for prey capture and grazers for scraping and collecting.

AbstractPeriodontitis is a complex inflammatory disease in which the host genome, in conjunction with extrinsic factors, determines susceptibility and progression. Genetic predisposition is the strongest risk factor in the first decades of life. As people age, chronic exposure to the periodontal microbiome puts a strain on the proper maintenance of ...
