Field Evaluation of a Stormwater Bioretention Filtration System

World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2007, 2007
A field evaluation of the Filterra ® Stormwater Bioretention Filtration System was performed to: 1) determine removal efficiency information based on field data, which is inherently more variable than laboratory data, and 2) compare the observed field efficiency with the efficiency determined in the laboratory. Inlet and outlet pollutant concentrations

Suspended pavement systems as opportunities for subsurface bioretention

Ecological Engineering, 2019
Abstract Trees supply numerous ecosystem services to the urban environment, including mitigating the urban heat island, improving air quality, and providing habitat for wildlife. However, due to the structural stability requirements of infrastructure such as sidewalks, roadways, and parking areas, urban soils are commonly characterized by high ...

An improved approach to design bioretention system media

Ecological Engineering, 2019
Abstract Bioretention modified media consists of modifier, soil, sand, and organic matter (OM), which was applied to clean rainfall runoff pollutants and control flood. These should support plant growth, cost-effectiveness, local availability besides rainwater runoff and its pollution control.

Urban Stormwater Runoff Nitrogen Composition and Fate in Bioretention Systems

Environmental Science & Technology, 2014
Multiple chemical forms of nitrogen in urban stormwater make its management challenging. Sixteen storm events were monitored and analyzed for total nitrogen (TN), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), nitrate (NO3-N), nitrite (NO2-N), ammonium (NH3-N), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in stormwater runoff and in treated discharge through a ...

Optimization of bioretention systems through application of ecological theory

WIREs Water, 2015
Current design of bioretention systems is intended to intercept and retain stormwater, enhance infiltration, and remove organic particulates, nutrients, pathogens, metals, and other contaminants using natural processes that derive from the interactions of water, soil, microbes, plants, and animals. Most bioretention systems function as isolated patches

The Role of Bioretention Systems in the Treatment of Stormwater

2013
Abstract Urbanization leads to water catchments becoming more impervious and channelized. These modifications to the natural landscape result in reduced water infiltration into soils and base flow components that cause a greater volume and rate of surface water runoff.

[Urban Runoff Phosphorus Removal Pathways in Bioretention Systems].

Huan jing ke xue= Huanjing kexue, 2019
The role of vegetation and saturated zones in stormwater-dissolved phosphorus (PO43--P) removal was investigated using bioretention microcosms. Nine bioretention columns were dosed with synthetic stormwater under various hydrological conditions and phosphorus loading rates and monitored over a 12-month period.

Tree Performance in a Gravel Bed Bioretention System

2022
Stormwater runoff is an issue in urban areas as impervious surfaces increase. Various retention systems that incorporate trees have been developed but are expensive and require large amounts of space and cause their implementation to be difficult.

Effect of carbaryl contamination on bioretention system nitrogen removal performance

Environmental Science and Pollution Research
Stormwater runoff is the main source of carbaryl in natural waters; bioretention cells can effectively retain and remove carbaryl from stormwater runoff. However, the accumulation of carbaryl in the bioretention cell impacts its stormwater purification ability, especially nitrogen removal performance.
