Mars simulated exposure and the characteristic Raman biosignatures of amino acids and halophilic microbes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Though Raman bands of α-amino acids (AA) are well documented, often only the strongest intensity bands are quoted as identifiers (e.g. Jenkins et al., 2005; De Gelder et al., 2007; Zhu et al., 2011).

Widespread Diagenesis at Unconformities in Gale Crater as Inferred From the Curiosity Rover and From Orbit

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 4, April 2025.
Abstract NASA's Curiosity rover has found widespread evidence of alteration in sedimentary rocks in Gale crater, Mars driven by interactions with fluids both before and after lithification (early and late diagenesis). Most notably, Curiosity observed distinctive color, chemical, and mineralogical changes interpreted as evidence of diagenesis at the ...

Biomarker Preservation and Survivability Under Extreme Dryness and Mars-Like UV Flux of a Desert Cyanobacterium Capable of Trehalose and Sucrose Accumulation

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2020
Unraveling how long life can persist under extreme dryness and what kind of environmental extremes can be faced by dried microorganisms is relevant to understand Mars habitability and to search for life on planets with transient liquid water availability.

Questioning the Reliability of Methane Detections on Mars by the Curiosity Rover

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 4, April 2025.
Abstract Over the past decade, the Tunable Laser Spectrometer (TLS) on NASA's Curiosity rover has reported several detections of methane on Mars, attracting attention due to the potential astrobiological implications of its presence. Here, we re‐analyze published TLS data, identifying issues in data robustness and reduction.

Testing Earth-like atmospheric evolution on exo-Earths through oxygen absorption: required sample sizes and the advantage of age-based target selection

open access: yes, 2020
Life has had a dramatic impact on the composition of Earth's atmosphere over time, which suggests that statistical studies of other inhabited planets' atmospheres could reveal how they co-evolve with life.

Role of Synthetic Biofilms in Bed Evolution and the Formation of Sedimentary Structures

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 6, 28 March 2025.
Abstract Microbes are known to shape topographies; however, mechanisms of biofilm‐sediment interactions and the dynamic evolution of biofilm‐covered bedforms remain poorly understood. Here, we explore the effects of synthetic biofilms on the geometry and temporal evolution of underwater bedforms through flume experiments.

Fingerprinting Non-Terran Biosignatures [PDF]

open access: yesAstrobiology, 2018
Most strategies for life detection rely upon finding features known to be associated with terran life, such as particular classes of molecules. But life may be vastly different on other planets and moons, particularly as we expand our efforts to explore ocean worlds like Europa and Enceladus.

Predicting Sprint Potential: A Machine Learning Model Based on Blood Metabolite Profiles in Young Male Athletes

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Sport Science, Volume 25, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT This study aims to utilize male blood metabolite signatures for (i) distinguishing between healthy individuals and athletes, thereby optimizing the athlete screening process; and (ii) predicting athletic performance in 100, 200, and 400 m sprints, enhancing precompetition preparation and intervention strategies.

Ichnofossils, Cracks or Crystals? A Test for Biogenicity of Stick-Like Structures from Vera Rubin Ridge, Mars

open access: yesGeosciences, 2020
New images from Mars rover Curiosity display millimetric, elongate stick- like structures in the fluvio-lacustrine deposits of Vera Rubin Ridge, the depositional environment of which has been previously acknowledged as habitable.

MR‐zero meets FLASH – controlling the transient signal decay in gradient‐ and RF‐spoiled gradient echo sequences

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, Volume 93, Issue 3, Page 942-960, March 2025.
Abstract Purpose The complex signal decay during the transient FLASH MRI readout can lead to artifacts in magnitude and phase images. We show that target‐driven optimization of individual RF flip angles and phases can realize near‐ideal signal behavior and mitigate artifacts.
