Climatic, edaphic, and biotic controls over storage and turnover of carbon in soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Soil carbon, a major component of the global carbon inventory, has significant potential for change with changing climate and human land use. We applied the Century ecosystem model to a series of forest and grassland sites distributed globally to examine

Biodegradable Poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate)/Poly(lactic) Acid Mulch Film with Soy Waste Filler for Improved Biodegradation and Plant Growth

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, EarlyView.
The study finds that mulch films made with poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate)/poly(lactic acid) and 10% soy waste degrade faster than those without soy. Plants grown with the soy‐containing films are 49% taller, suggesting that the soy acts as a biostimulant.

The role of mangrove fine root production and decomposition on soil organic carbon component ratios

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Mangrove fine roots are an important contributor to soil organic matter (SOC), yet how their production and decomposition affect SOC accumulation across the sea-land gradient is still elusive.

Using Sensory Analysis and Stated Preference Valuation to Assess the Willingness to Pay for Fresh Tomato Attributes

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study combines sensory analysis and stated preference valuation techniques to assess the monetary value of organoleptic attributes of new tomato varieties. The tomatoes evaluated included two new varieties adapted to South Texas growing conditions, a commercial check, and tomatoes imported from Mexico.

Interannual variation in the metazoan parasite communities of bigeye trevally Caranx sexfasciatus (Pisces, Carangidae)

open access: yesParasite, 2020
Parasite communities in Caranx sexfasciatus were characterized and analyzed to determine any interannual variations in structure and/or species composition. In total, 422 C.

Lignin: Characterization of a Multifaceted Crop Component

open access: yesTheScientificWorldJournal, 2013
Lignin is a plant component with important implications for various agricultural disciplines. It confers rigidity to cell walls, and is therefore associated with tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses and the mechanical stability of plants.

Advances in Invertebrate Biohybrid Robotics: Leveraging Nature for Locomotion and Sensing in Engineered Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This review explores invertebrate biohybrid robots that integrate living organisms—such as insects, jellyfish, spiders, and sea slugs—into robotic systems for locomotion, sensing, and actuation. The advantages in efficiency and cost, discuss control, and power challenges are highlighted, and future considerations to guide the development of sustainable,

Patterns of diversity change for forest vegetation across different climatic regions - A compound habitat gradient analysis approach

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2020
Biotic diversity of ecological communities can be driven by a mixture of climatic, soil and biotic factors from local to regional scales. Patterns of diversity change were often examined along latitudinal or elevational gradients, which were mainly ...

Role of Cyanobacterial Exopolysaccharides in Phototrophic Biofilms and in Complex Microbial Mats

open access: yesLife, 2015
Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are an important class of biopolymers with great ecological importance. In natural environments, they are a common feature of microbial biofilms, where they play key protective and structural roles.
