Beyond observed diversity: Community completeness negatively affects ecosystem invasibility across scales

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Charles Elton proposed that species‐rich communities are more resistant to invasion, yet a well‐known paradox persists: native diversity suppresses invasion at small scales while correlating positively with non‐native species diversity at broad scales.

Early‐life environment drives long‐term decrease in adult body mass in a wild bird population

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Using more than 90,000 body mass measures of adult and nestling great tits Parus major, we show that the 1 SD decline in adult mass between 1978 and 2024 is a consequence of changes in the environment (i.e. increase in population density) experienced at early life.

Paler within the city: Carotenoid‐based colouration covaries negatively with the proportion of impervious surface in great tit (Parus major) territories across Europe

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Across six European cities, great tits in more impervious territories had paler carotenoid‐based plumage, but not lower brightness or UV chroma. This suggests that urban habitat imperviousness is associated specifically with lower carotenoid pigment deposition, rather than broad changes in feather reflectance or structural quality.

Field validation of blow fly age estimation methods for determining time of placement of human remains in Tennessee, USA

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract Forensic entomology currently represents one of the best approaches for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMIMIN) in medicolegal death investigations given certain parameters and assumptions are met. However, validation of standard estimation methods used in this field are few and far between.

Taxonomic and functional diversity of noctuoid moths in a Mediterranean coastal area: implications for dune conservation in a long‐term ecological research eLTER site

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This study investigates the taxonomic and functional diversity of noctuoid moths in a protected coastal dune system in Central Italy, revealing strong ecological associations between moth assemblages and dune zonation. Differences in species composition and trait attributes, along with the presence of habitat‐exclusive species, highlight the role of ...
