Sediment reworking by marine benthic species from the Gullmar Fjord (Western Sweden): Importance of faunal biovolume [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2007
In order to compare and quantify sediment reworking activities by different species/functional groups of macrofauna, a laboratory experiment was carried out with species from the Gullmarsfjord (Western Sweden).

New data‐driven method from 3D confocal microscopy for calculating phytoplankton cell biovolume

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, 2015
Confocal laser scanner microscopy coupled with an image analysis system was used to directly determine the shape and calculate the biovolume of phytoplankton organisms by constructing 3D models of cells.

Bacterial carbon biomass calculated from biovolumes

Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 1998
A conversion factor (CF) for the transformation of bacterial biovolumes to carbon biomass was calculated from measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and bacterial biovolumes (BV) in a large number of bacterial growth experiments from both freshwater and marine systems.

Improved biovolume estimation of Microcystis aeruginosa colonies: A statistical approach

Journal of Microbiological Methods, 2018
The Microcystis aeruginosa complex (MAC) clusters many of the most common freshwater and brackish bloom-forming cyanobacteria. In monitoring protocols, biovolume estimation is a common approach to determine MAC colonies biomass and useful for prediction purposes.

Methods for the estimation of the biovolume of microorganisms: A critical review

Limnology and Oceanography: Methods, 2017
AbstractBiomass estimation is central in most microbial plankton ecology studies. Numerous advances have been made that rendered this task more and more effective, from the introduction of allometric volume‐to‐carbon conversion factors to the development of submersible flow‐through imaging devices. Although several ingenious methods have been suggested

Cyanobacterial samples: preservation, enumeration, and biovolume measurements

2017
Estimating the occurrence, cell concentration, and biomass of cyanobacteria in natural samples is a fundamental requirement to assess potential risks linked to cyanobacterial bloom events. Special attention should be given to ensure that a reliable sampling technique is used.

Biovolume as a tool in biomass determination of Oligochaeta and Chironomidae

Freshwater Biology, 1993
SUMMARY  We used biovolume as a simple non‐destructive means for estimating biomass for several tubificid and chironomid species. Biovolumes were determined by treating the organisms as cylinders and measuring body lengths and diameters; estimates were verified by measuring the displacement of water by live organisms in a 5‐ml burette.

The Significance of Hyphal Diameter in Calculation of Fungal Biovolume

Oikos, 1979
Three ways to calculate average hyphal cross section in agarfilm slides were compared in a field study including 5 soil horizons sampled 4 times. The method of calculation strongly affected the estimated value for soil fungal biovolume. Biovolume estimated with the different methods varied by more than 30%.

Digital holography as a method for 3D imaging and estimating the biovolume of motile cells

Lab on a Chip, 2013
Sperm morphology is regarded as a significant prognostic factor for fertilization, as abnormal sperm structure is one of the most common factors in male infertility. Furthermore, obtaining accurate morphological information is an important issue with strong implications in zoo-technical industries, for example to perform sorting of species X from ...
