Spatial and temporal fluctuation of phytoplankton functional groups in a tropical reservoir - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.12988

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2013
Along the horizontal axis of reservoirs are generally recognized three zones (fluvial, transition and lacustrine) with distinct hydrodynamic and physical, chemical and biological properties.

Occurrence and toxicity of Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanobacteria) in the Paraná River, downstream of the Yacyretá dam (Argentina) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cyanobacteria constitute the main toxin producers in inland water ecosystems and have extensive global distribution. The presence of hepatotoxins in aquatic environments is hazardous to human and animal health; even though the presence and identification

Influence of biotic and abiotic sediment factors on abundance and biomass of harpacticoid copepods in a shallow Antarctic bay

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2005
This study presents data of the first investigation on benthic harpacticoid copepods in Potter Cove, King George Island, Antarctica (62°14’S, 58°40’W) with special emphasis on spatial distribution and relation to environmental factors. In addition to the

Comparison of FlowCAM and microscope biovolume measurements for a diverse freshwater phytoplankton community

open access: yesJournal of Plankton Research, 2019
FlowCAM combines flow cytometry and imaging to rapidly enumerate, classify and measure particles. The instrument potentially increases processing speed of phytoplankton samples.

Seasonal and diel variations in the vertical distribution, composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in a deep Chilean Patagonian Fjord [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2022
Comau Fjord is a stratified Chilean Patagonian Fjord characterized by a shallow brackish surface layer and a >400 m layer of aragonite-depleted subsurface waters.

Deficiency of RgpG causes major defects in cell division and biofilm formation, and deficiency of LytR-CpsAPsr family proteins leads to accumulation of cell wall antigens in culture medium by Streptococcus mutans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Streptococcus mutans is known to possess rhamnose-glucose polysaccharide (RGP), a major cell wall antigen. S. mutans strains deficient in rgpG , encoding the first enzyme of the RGP biosynthesis

Zooplankton size composition and production just after drastic ice coverage changes in the northern Bering Sea assessed via ZooScan

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Drastic environmental changes were noted in the northern Bering Sea in 2018. A reduction in sea ice affected several trophic levels within the ecosystem; this resulted in delayed phytoplankton blooms, the northward shifting of fish stocks, and a decrease

Antagonistic and synergistic responses to solar ultraviolet radiation and increased temperature of phytoplankton from cenotes (sink holes) of the Yucatán Peninsula, México [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Cenotes (sink holes) are karstic formations characteristic of the Yucatán Peninsula and are the main source of fresh water in the region. Because of their tropical location, they receive high levels of solar radiation and are exposed to high temperatures.

Relationships between biovolume and carbon and nitrogen content of bacterioplankton [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Ecology, 1994
Cell volume, carbon and nitrogen content were determined for bacteria grown in batch cultures in water samples collected at five localities in western Florida, USA. Cultures were set up by inoculating 0.2 μm filtered water with 2.5 to 7.0% of 1.0 μm filtered water. Biovolumes of the bacteria were measured by epifluorescence photomicrography.

Per capita interactions and stress tolerance drive stress-induced changes in biodiversity effects on ecosystem functions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Environmental stress changes the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Because species interactions shape biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships, changes in per capita ...
