Foot anatomy, walking energetics, and the evolution of human bipedalism.

Journal of Human Evolution, 2021
Interspecies differences in locomotor efficiency have been extensively researched, but within-species variation in the metabolic cost of walking and its underlying causes have received much less attention. This is somewhat surprising given the importance

Revision of hip flexor anatomy and function in modern humans, and implications for the evolution of hominin bipedalism

The Anatomical Record, 2021
Hip flexor musculature was instrumental in the evolution of hominin bipedal gait and in endurance running for hunting in the genus Homo. The iliacus and psoas major muscles were historically considered to have separate tendons with different insertions ...

Bipedalism

Nutrition and Health, 1993
Reasons why mammalian bipedalism is so rare. Problems encountered by the larger arboreal mammals when they descend to ground level. Reasons for believing that hominid ancestors were never knuckle-walkers. Primate models which combine arboreal life with incipient bipedalism. Disadvantages of mammalian bipedalism.

Gait compliance alters ground reaction forces in human walking: implications for the evolution of bipedalism.

Journal of Experimental Biology
Despite decades of inquiry, the evolution of bipedalism remains a mystery. Some have argued that a compliant walking gait, with deep hip and knee flexion to moderate ground reaction forces, was used by early human ancestors, marking our relatively stiff ...

Bipedal Locomotion

Science, 1987
In the letter "Tanker 'dumping' regulations" by T. S. Wyman (5 June, p. 1160), the years of amendations to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, mentioned in the second paragraph, were incorrect. The amendations were made in 1978, 1984, and 1985 (not 1987).

On the Stability of Bipedal Walking

2010
Stability of bipedal locomotion is analyzed using a model of a planar biped written in the framework of systems with unilateral constraints. Based on this model, two different stable walking gaits are derived: one which fulfills the widely used criterion of the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and another one violating this criterion.

Bipedalism for Quadrupedal Robots: Versatile Loco-Manipulation Through Risk-Adaptive Reinforcement Learning

IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots
Loco-manipulation of quadrupedal robots has broadened robotic applications, but using legs as manipulators often compromises locomotion, while mounting arms complicates the system.

The energetic costs of load-carrying and the evolution of bipedalism [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Human Evolution, 2008
The evolution of habitual bipedalism is still a fundamental yet unsolved question for paleoanthropologists, and carrying is popular as an explanation for both the early adoption of upright walking and as a positive selection pressure once a terrestrial ...
