BIPAP – Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure

[Weaning from respirators via biphasic positive airway pressure].
Ugeskrift for laeger, 1996Weaning procedures during the course of intermittent positive pressure ventilation are often difficult. A case is presented in which biphasic positive airway pressure (BiPAP) seemed to be superior to other well known ventilator weaning regimens. The course of the weaning procedure is described.

Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP) — a New Mode of Assisted Spontaneous Breathing
1995Biphasic positive airway pressure (BIPAP) is a new ventilatory support technique based on time-cycled switching between two levels of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) [1]. Therefore, BIPAP allows unrestricted spontaneous breathing throught pressure controlled time-cycled mechanical ventilation (Fig. 1).

[Biphasic positive airway pressure (BIPAP)--a new form of augmented ventilation].
Der Anaesthesist, 1989Two modes of combining spontaneous breathing and mechanical ventilation are already in use: periodic mechanical support always followed by a period of spontaneous breathing (intermittent mandatory ventilation; IMV) and mechanical support of each spontaneous breath (inspiratory assistance; IA).

The pressure-time product (PTP) and work of breathing (W) were measured in 19 intubated patients during weaning from mechanical ventilation after aortocoronary bypass surgery. The patients were supported by two different ventilatory modes: biphasic continuous positive airway pressure (Biphasic CPAP; a ventilatory mode that permits spontaneous breathing

Biphasic positive airway pressure (BIPAP)--a new mode of ventilatory support.
European journal of anaesthesiology, 1994Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP) can be described as pressure controlled ventilation in a system allowing unrestricted spontaneous breathing at any moment of the ventilatory cycle. It can also be described as a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) system with a time-cycled change of the applied CPAP level.
