Neurocognitive Aging Following Acute Illness: Pathobiology and a Framework for Developing Neurotherapeutic Agents

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
In this review, we discuss the scientific basis for how neurocognitive aging occurs after critical illness, including sepsis, trauma, and burns, and the clinical need to develop therapies to reduce inflammation, protect the blood–brain barrier, remove senescent cells, and enhance neuroplasticity.

Protective Effect of Thai Perilla frutescens Seed Oil Against Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Induced by Cigarette Smoke Extract in a Mouse Model

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2026.
PSO exhibited protective effects against CSE‐induced pulmonary inflammation by reducing macrophage and eosinophil infiltration, preventing alveolar destruction, and enhancing antioxidant defense by lowering serum MDA levels in a murine COPD model. These findings support the potential role as a dietary supplement for the prevention or attenuation of ...

Regional lung aeration and ventilation during pressure support and biphasic positive airway pressure ventilation in experimental lung injury. [PDF]

open access: yesCrit Care, 2010
Abstract Introduction There is an increasing interest in biphasic positive airway pressure with spontaneous breathing (BIPAP+SBmean), which is a combination of time-cycled controlled breaths at two levels of continuous positive airway pressure (BIPAP+SBcontrolled) and non-assisted spontaneous breathing ...

Noninvasive high-frequency oscillatory ventilation as respiratory support in preterm infants: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2019
Background Noninvasive high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (nHFOV), a relatively new modality, is gaining popularity despite scarce evidence. This meta-analysis was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of nHFOV as respiratory support in ...

High flow biphasic positive airway pressure by helmet – effects on pressurization, tidal volume, carbon dioxide accumulation and noise exposure [PDF]

open access: yesCritical Care, 2009
Abstract Introduction Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) with a helmet device is often associated with poor patient-ventilator synchrony and impaired carbon dioxide (CO2) removal, which might lead to failure.

Post-acute day and night non-invasive respiratory intervention use and outcome: A brief report

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe daytime and nighttime use and outcome of non-invasive respiratory intervention (NIRI) for infants born prematurely and for children with medical complexity (CMC) during a post-acute care hospital (PACH) admission ...

Evidence‐based guideline for clinical practice in the diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of recurrent wheezing in infants and toddlers in China

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, Volume 10, Issue 3, Page 199-218, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Wheezing is a common respiratory symptom in infants and toddlers, and recurrent wheezing is a significant respiratory disorder affecting this age group. Given the multifactorial etiology of recurrent wheezing, clinical practice lacks standardized diagnostic and therapeutic protocols. Recent years have witnessed substantial progress in clinical

Awakening ECMO During Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Single-center Experience

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine
Introduction: Recently, some centers have used extubation during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to eliminate barotrauma and volutrauma as a lung rest strategy.

Biphasic Effects on Allergen‐Specific Type 2 Memory B Cells Over 18 Months Sublingual Immunotherapy for House Dust Mite Allergy

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 6, Page 2172-2183, June 2026.
Rapid clinical relief of allergy symptoms during 18 months of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for house dust mite (HDM) is associated with increased serum IgE, IgG2, and IgG4 to Der p 1 and Der p 2. Der p 1 and Der p 2 specific Type 2 memory B cells are expanded at 4 months and 12 months of SLIT, with increased expression of CD29 and IgG4.

Fentanyl Compromises Lower‐Airway Mechanics and Naloxone Triggers a Transient Mechanical Overshoot

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 242, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Opioid‐induced respiratory depression (OIRD) is the leading cause of death following opioid overdose, due to its effects on central rhythm generation, and airway and thoracic constriction. While the effects on rhythm generation have been well documented, the effects of fentanyl on airway constriction are less well understood. We tested the
