The genetics of bipolar disorder

Molecular Psychiatry, 2020
Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the most heritable mental illnesses, but the elucidation of its genetic basis has proven to be a very challenging endeavor. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have transformed our understanding of BD, providing the first reproducible evidence of specific genetic markers and a highly polygenic architecture that ...

Endophenotypes in bipolar disorder†

American Journal of Medical Genetics, 2002

However, because of the genetic heterogeneity inherent in bipolar disorder, additional strategies may need to be employed to fully dissect the genetic underpinnings.

Genetics of Bipolar Disorder

2010
In this chapter, we will attempt to outline the current state of genetic knowledge for bipolar disorder and briefly summarize the main findings from genetic epidemiology studies. We then review the most recent original literature, based largely on genome-wide association study methods. We conclude with some ideas about future directions.
