Does Working in a Hazelnut Processing Factory Increase the Risk of Hazel Pollen and Nut Sensitivity?

open access: yesAllergology International, 2005
Background: Hazelnut has been reported to be one of the most important food allergens. We set out to study whether exposure to hazelnut allergen by occupational contact increases hazel pollen and hazelnut sensitivity and causes workplace-related allergic

Adaptive Hydrogenation of Alkynes Using CO as a Molecular Trigger to Selectively Produce Alkanes or Z‐Alkenes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
One catalyst for two products: CO acts as a molecular trigger for adaptive alkyne hydrogenation using supported Pd nanoparticles. The catalyst reversibly switches between the formation of alkanes under H2 and Z‐alkenes under H2/CO for 37 structurally diverse alkynes.

Pravastatin Improves Glucose Regulation and Biocompatibility of Agarose Encapsulated Porcine Islets following Transplantation into Pancreatectomized Dogs

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Research, 2014
The encapsulation of porcine islets is an attractive methodology for the treatment of Type I diabetes. In the current study, the use of pravastatin as a mild anti-inflammatory agent was investigated in pancreatectomized diabetic canines transplanted with

Falling fowl of the chicken reference genome: pitfalls of studying polymorphic endogenous retroviruses

open access: yesRetrovirology, 2021
High quality reference genomes have facilitated the study of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs). However, there are an increasing number of published works which assume the ERVs in reference genomes are universal; even those of evolutionarily recent ...

High‐Performance Bio‐Glue From the Berries of a Parasitic Plant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report a fully bio‐based adhesive derived primarily from a (poly)saccharide extract obtained from the berries of the hemi‐parasitic plant mistletoe (Viscum album), supplemented with tannic and malic acid without any further chemical functionalization.

Wood‐Derived Nanocellulose‐Biocarbon Fresnel‐Zone Plate Lenses for Sub‐THz Frequency Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Wood‐derived nanocellulose and lignin‐based biocarbon were combined to fabricate fully bio‐based Fresnel zone plate (FZP) lenses for sub‐terahertz frequencies. These sustainable FZP lenses exhibit low dielectric loss and high directivity, achieving performance comparable to that of metallic references, and remain functional under environmental stress ...
