Strontium Charge‐Generation Assistant Layer for High‐Performance Tandem Organic Light Emitting Diodes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrathin Sr interlayer is introduced as a charge‐generation assist layer to overcome the electron‐injection barrier in deep‐LUMO charge‐generation layers (CGLs) of tandem OLEDs. The Sr layer facilitates trap‐assisted tunneling and lowers the effective injection barrier, enabling improved charge balance and yielding tandem OLEDs with doubled ...

Observing FRB 121102 with VERITAS; Searching for Associated TeV Emission

open access: yes, 2017
Fast radio bursts are bright, unresolved and short flashes of radio emission originating from outside the Milky Way. The origin of these mysterious outbursts is unknown, but their high luminosity and short duration has prompted much speculation.

Spermiogenesis in Birds [PDF]

open access: yesSpermatogenesis, 2014
Current knowledge on avian spermiogenesis, including strengths and weaknesses, has been reviewed. Information on avian spermiogenesis considerably lags behind that in mammals because of the paucity of reports in birds. Spermiogenesis in passerine birds has received even much less attention than in non-passerine birds.

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

Resighting data reveal weak connectivity from wintering to breeding grounds in a range-restricted and endangered long-distance migratory passerine

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2018
Understanding migratory connectivity is fundamental to the ecology, evolution, and conservation of migratory species. The endangered Kirtland's Warbler (Setophaga kirtlandii) has a restricted breeding range in early successional jack pine (Pinus ...

Urban Bird Feeding: Connecting People with Nature

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
At a time of unprecedented biodiversity loss, researchers are increasingly recognizing the broad range of benefits provided to humankind by nature. However, as people live more urbanized lifestyles there is a progressive disengagement with the natural ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

When marking tone reduces fluency: an orthography experiment in Cameroon [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Should an alphabetic orthography for a tone language include tone marks? Opinion and practice are divided along three lines: zero marking, phonemic marking and various reduced marking schemes.
