Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Understory vegetation in planted pine forests governs bird community composition and diversity in the eastern Mediterranean region

open access: yesForest Ecosystems, 2019
Background Managed forests can become a seminatural habitat by allowing natural vegetation to establish under the tree canopy. The aim of this study was to examine how this natural understory vegetation in pine plantations affects bird community ...

Meadow birds in Sweden – population trends, effects of restoration and management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The area of Swedish wet meadows has decreased drastically during the last century due to cultivation and abandonment. During the same time the meadow bird fauna have changed considerably.

Photonic Time Crystals and Time‐Varying Electromagnetic Metamatter: A New Direction for Ultrafast Tunable Photonic and Microwave Materials and Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Photonic time crystals (PTCs) are systems in which electromagnetic parameters are modulated periodically in time, producing momentum bandgaps via temporal scattering rather than spatial Bragg processes. This review examines the theoretical frameworks, modeling, and computational tools for time‐varying media, and summarizes experimental demonstrations ...

Biodiversity and economic incentives in agriculture : integrating bird fauna values into decision-making [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Our optimal control model identifies economic reasons as to why several farmland bird populations have dramatically declined in modern agricultural landscapes. By integrating bird fauna values into decision-making on cereal crop choice, herbicide use and

Habitat suitability models and carrying capacity estimations for rock ptarmigans in a protected area of the Italian Alps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Rock ptarmigan populations in the Alps are suffering an overall decline, and management actions are needed to ensure their conservation. Yet wildlife management and conservation actions are often the consequences of political decisions taken by subjects ...

Decoding Naturalistic Episodic Memory with Artificial Intelligence and Brain‐Machine Interface

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Episodic memory weaves together what, where, and when of experience into a personal narrative. Cutting‐edge AI models may decode this intricate process in real‐life settings, revealing how neural activity encodes naturalistic memories. By merging AI with brain–machine interfaces, researchers are edging closer to mapping and even engineering memory ...

Genetic Control of Tissue Remodeling by a Non‐Coding SNP in ITGA8 Explains Carotenoid‐Based Color Polymorphism in Marine Mollusks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, the orange‐muscle giant abalone (Haliotis gigantea) is used as a model to identify a non‐coding SNP that disrupts the interaction between ITGA8 pre‐mRNA and the splicing factor ILF2, leading to altered ITGA8 splicing. These splicing changes promote carotenoid accumulation in abalone muscle through the regulation of tissue remodeling ...

Spatial dynamics of understorey insectivorous birds and arthropods in a southeastern Brazilian Atlantic woodlot

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
Spatial distribution and spatial relationships in capture rates of understorey insectivorous birds and density of arthropods were investigated in a patch of upper montane rain forest in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil, from January to December ...
