Birefringent omnidirectional reflector
Applied Optics, 2004Anisotropic optical coatings offer unique polarizing properties, unmatched by conventional isotropic devices. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of a birefringent omnidirectional reflector, a type of photonic crystal, which exhibits complete reflection of radiation at 1.1 microm for all incidence angles and polarizations.

Birefringent imaging spectrometer
Applied Optics, 2002A Fourier-transform imaging spectrometer, believed to be novel, based on the Savart polariscope is presented. There is no slit in this instrument, which means that it has a high throughput. The principle and the system configuration are described. Several preliminary experimental results are shown.

Each film held at a certain elongation in a jig was allowed to swell in a penetrating but nondissolving liquid. Seven liquids with different refractive indices were employed.

Reversibility of photoinduced birefringence in ultralow-birefringence fibers
Optics Letters, 1996New measurements of the birefringence induced in ultralow-birefringence fibers by a succession of orthogonally polarized UV side exposures show the reversibility of the process. Moreover, it is shown that the birefringence growth depends on two parameters, the total irradiation dose and the nature of the successive polarized UV side exposures.
