Birefringence of muscle proteins and the problem of structural birefringence
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure, 1968Abstract 1. 1.|The birefringences of the muscle proteins actin and myosin were determined and compared with data on other fibrous proteins. 2. 2.|The specific birefringence Δn sp = Δn/f v c is the birefringences per unit volume fraction of a parallel array of rod-like molecules.

IT has been known for some time that the cell membrane of an amœba in water is birefringent. The optical axis lies radially, and the sign is positive with respect to the tangent1 (Fig. 1). I have found that if an Amœba proteus is fixed for about 10 min.

In recent years it has become common for the birefringence pattern of a thermally toughened glass lens to be examined, and for a judgmental opinion of the impact resistance of that lens to be based on the regularity of the observed pattern. Laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the validity of this practice.

Birefringence in viscoelastic materials
Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Physik ZAMP, 1971In a previous paper [1] the theory of stress birefringence in elastic materials subject to finite deformations was considered. This theory was based on the constitutive assumption that in such materials the dielectric constant and specific reluctance tensors at time t depend only on the deformation gradients at time t.

The Spectral Dispersion of Birefringence, Especially of Birefringent Plastic Sheets
Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1949It is shown apparently for the first time how dispersion of birefringence (retardation, phase difference or ellipticity) can be measured through the visible spectrum by the use of a Martens type of polarization photometer and monochromator. Dispersion curves are given for several organic thermoplastic sheets including those with both normal and ...

A study of photoinduced birefringence in bow-tie (stress-induced) high-birefringence (Hi-Bi) and low-birefringence (Lo-Bi) germanosilicate optical fibers is conducted by using 532-nm light. The study reveals that Hi-Bi fibers are insensitive to light polarized along the fast axis, in contrast to Lo-Bi fibers, which are photosensitive along both axes ...

Wavelength dependence of birefringence in highly birefringent fibers
Optics Letters, 1982A simple technique is used to measure the wavelength dependence of the birefringence in highly birefringent fibers. In stress-induced fibers, the stress and shape birefringences reinforce each other, whereas in elliptical-core fibers the stress and shape birefringences can either reinforce each other or partially cancel, depending on the wavelength.

Improvements in birefringent filters 6: Analog birefringent elements
Applied Optics, 1980A 100-mA analog birefringent element has been built from a polarizing wide field solid Michelson interferometer. The analog element behaves on-axis identically to a crystal element but has the field characteristics of a wide field Michelson. It is demonstrated that by proper choice of glasses for the arms of the Michelson the wide field condition can ...

Birefringent omnidirectional reflector
Applied Optics, 2004Anisotropic optical coatings offer unique polarizing properties, unmatched by conventional isotropic devices. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of a birefringent omnidirectional reflector, a type of photonic crystal, which exhibits complete reflection of radiation at 1.1 microm for all incidence angles and polarizations.

Materials for Birefringent Coatings
Applied Optics, 1994We discuss recent developments in methods for monitoring the anisotropic growth and properties of tilted columnar films and present results for the perpendicular incidence birefringence of aluminum oxide, Merck Substance Hi, silicon oxide, tantalum oxide, titanium oxide, and zirconium oxide.
