The birefringence of wool fibers from three different breeds of sheep, Lincoln, Chokla, and Merino, was measured at various relative humidities. Assuming that the α-helical phase in the crystalline regions is the only anisotropic component contributing to birefringence, the reduction in birefringence with increasing moisture content can be predicted ...

It is known that Maxwell's equations become nonlinear if the effect of virtual electron-positron pair creation is included. The vacuum, thus behaving like a polarizable continuum, is shown to exhibit the phenomenon of birefringence.

[88] Birefringence and birefringence gradients in rod outer segments
1982Abstract With carefully designed experiments, many of the disadvantages of using Δn as a probe of ROS substructure can be overcome. Useful information about molecular and supramolecular level organization has been derived. Birefringence analysis has been instrumental in revealing that disk membranes are not uniformly structured.

Electric birefringence of actin
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Specialized Section on Biophysical Subjects, 1964Abstract The polymerization of actin was followed by the measurement of electric birefringence. Small elementary polymers of actin which appeared at very low salt concentrations or at the initial stage of polymerization showed a positive electric birefringence. They were oriented with the long axis parallel to the electric field.

Holodiagrams in birefringent media
Applied Optics, 2003The modifications to the holodiagram concept to describe free propagation (the extraordinary ray) inside birefringent materials are described. Holodiagrams are graphs showing the loci where the sum or the difference in the optical path from a generic point to two foci is the same.

A rotating-field phase shifter is described which permits continuous electronic tuning of birefringent filters over extended spectral regions. The use of such phase shifters reduces the conditions for tuning synchronism between all filter stages to a simple relationship between the electrical driving frequencies.

Stress-Birefringence in Polystyrene
Nature, 1950THE photo-elastic properties of polystyrene at temperatures above its softening point have been investigated earlier1,2, and it has been found that under these conditions the stress-birefringence is in the opposite direction from that found for most other materials.

To the Editor: In reviewing the literature on corneal birefringence, I was intrigued by the observations of Cogan 1 on Haidinger's brushes, particularly the opposite rotation of the brushes when cellophane was interposed. Subsequent work on the phenomena by Stanworth and Naylor 2 provides beautiful corroboration of the dichroic macular theory of ...

Abstract It has been shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that in simple elongation of a sample of pure-gum vulcanizate, an approximately linear relationship between the tensile stress t and the birefringence (n1−n2) obtains, provided the strain is not sufficiently large to produce crystallization.

We develop a general theory of birefringence and dichroism to account for the optical (and electrical) anisotropy exhibited by the refractive indices and attenuation coefficients of biological tissues or of composites of aligned particles. The primary bases for dichroism are the same as we considered before for birefringence (i.e., anisotropic ...
