Fluorination Improves the Electro-Optical Properties of Benzoxazole-Terminated Liquid Crystals in High Birefringence Liquid Crystal Mixtures: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

open access: yesMolecules, 2023
Aromatic heterocyclic liquid crystal (LC) materials have received much attention from LC chemists for their high birefringence and large dielectric anisotropy, yet few have reported their properties in LC mixtures.

Tunable and Recyclable Piezoelectric Biomaterials via Ion‐Directed Guanine‐Quadruplex Assembly

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Guanine‐quadruplex (GQ) assemblies, formed via ion‐mediated self‐assembly of amphiphilic guanine derivatives, are introduced as tunable and recyclable piezoelectric biomaterials. Distinct alkali ions induce unique dipole configurations and piezoelectric outputs, with K⁺ yielding the highest performance.

Tailoring chiral optical properties by femtosecond laser direct writing in silica

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications, 2023
A two-layers model is proposed to reveal that femtosecond laser direct writing chirality inside silica glass has two contributions: a form birefringence and a stress related birefringence.

Combined Use of Ultrasonic and Electromagnetic Fields for the Study of Bonding Mechanisms between Dexamethasone Disodium Phosphate Molecules

open access: yesQuantum Beam Science, 2023
We have investigated the ultrasonically induced birefringence traces of aqueous solutions of dexamethasone disodium phosphate, a derivative of hydrocortisone (cortisol).

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

Long-Time Relaxation of Stress-Induced Birefringence of Microcrystalline Alkali Halide Crystals

open access: yesMolecules, 2018
Alkali halide single crystals are most commonly used as the diluent matrix in the tablet method or disk technique for spectroscopic measurements. However, stress-induced birefringence (SIB) of alkali halides as well as intrinsic birefringence manifest ...

Energy‐Efficient Bulk Photoalignment of Main‐Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymers Enabled by In Situ Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ monitoring of bulk photoalignment reveals how molecular weight, azobenzene content, cooling rate, and thickness govern ordering in main‐chain liquid crystalline polymers. Optimized copolymers exceed conventional thickness limits, maintaining stable alignment up to 130 µm with high energy efficiency and reversible optical patterning.

Photo‐Switching Thermal and Lithium‐Ion Conductivity in Azobenzene Polymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light‐responsive azobenzene polymers control thermal and ionic transport simultaneously through structural transitions. UV illumination disrupts π–π stacking, converting crystalline trans states to amorphous cis configurations. Thermal conductivity drops from 0.45 to 0.15 W·m−1·K−1 while Li+ diffusivity increases 100 fold. This dual transport switching

Phase-matching-induced near-chirp-free solitons in normal-dispersion fiber lasers

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications, 2022
The fiber birefringence, chromatic dispersion, and nonlinear effect follow a phase-matching principle, enabling the formation of birefringence-managed solitons in normal-dispersion fiber lasers containing a section of polarization-maintaining fiber.

Impact of Lattice Heterogeneity on Broadband Optical Retardation in Stacked 2D Perovskite Single Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that interfaces between organic and inorganic layers govern long‐range stacking disorder and in‐plane anisotropy in 2D metal‐halide perovskites. By comparing single‐cation AB‐AB and ordered mixed‐cation ABCD‐ABCD stackings, SCXRD reveals enhanced mosaicity, while optics confirm high birefringence.
