Microscale linear birefringence measurement
SPIE Proceedings, 2010A new method for linear birefringence measurement in micro-scale is presented. Mueller matrix is used to represent the anisotropy properties of sample, optical fiber probe of scanning optical near-field microscopy (SNOM) and other optical components. Two polarization modulators are used to complete the quantitative measurement.

Birefringence measurements in thiourea
Ferroelectrics, 1990Abstract Optical birefringence measurements have been performed on normal (hydrogenated) thiourea between 4 and 300 K. A tentative explanation of the results is given for the whole temperature range.

Birefringence measurement of fiber-optic devices
Applied Optics, 1981A spectrometer-polarimeter is described for the measurement of the wavelength-dependent general birefringence of single-mode optical fibers and fiber-optic devices. The polarizer rotates, the analyzer is stepped, and a Fourier transform yields the principal axes and retardation. The Poincaré representation of polarization is used throughout.

Applied Optics, 2008
A new application of the optical vortex birefringence compensator has been presented. Two parameters of elliptically birefringent medium, an ellipticity angle and an optical path difference, can be measured simultaneously in the setup based on the C polarization type singularities generated using two Wollaston compensators.

Birefringence imaging with imperfect benches: application to large-scale birefringence measurements
Applied Optics, 2000We describe a birefringence measurement bench that allows fast two-dimensional measurements of low-birefringence fields in large transparent samples. We present calculations that show that, even when a birefringence bench exhibits defects (nonideal components, misalignments, etc.), measurements can be performed under realistic conditions without any a ...

Birefringence Measurement of Liquid Crystals
Optica Acta: International Journal of Optics, 1979The cylindrical cell method for determining the refractive indices of liquid crystals is described. This method is based on the use of a cylindrical cell composed of a pair of semi-cylindrical prisms and the measurement of the incident angle dependence of transmitted light intensities.

Measurement of birefringence in ZnCdTe
Ferroelectrics, 1992Abstract Birefringence was observed for the first time in the ferroelectric phase of ZnCdTe samples containing 10% and 4% ZnTe. Near the transition temperature, the birefringence varied linearly with the temperature. The temperature coefficient of the indices of refraction was also measured and these also revealed the anisotropy of the ferroelectric ...

Automated birefringence measurement system
Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments, 1979The system has proved itself as an invaluable laboratory tool for the characterisation of the polarisation properties of optical fibres. The system is described and an example is given of the measurements which have been made. The linear birefringence results are accurate to within 0.5 degrees for a wide range of birefringence.

Birefringence Measurements in Optical Waveguides
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2013This paper deals with an experimental nondestructive technique for the measurement of modal birefringence of integrated optical waveguides. The method is based on a magneto-optical perturbation technique combined with a highly sensitive polarimeter. Magneto-optical modal conversion, through the Verdet constant of the waveguides, and its dependence on ...

Measurements on birefringent fibres: COST 217 interlaboratory measurement campaign
IEE Proceedings A Science, Measurement and Technology, 1993An interlaboratory comparison of measurements on three types of commercially available polarisation maintaining fibres was performed in the framework of COST 217. The obtained accuracy and reproducibility for the parameters as the mode field diameter, cutoff wavelength and chromatic dispersion was in the same range for these high birefringent fibres as
