Spectral-domain measurement of phase modal birefringence in highly birefringent fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
We present a new method for measuring the wavelength dependence of phase modal birefringence in highly birefringent fibers. The method is based on application of a lateral pointlike force on the fiber and resolution of the spectral interference fringes.

Towards Automatic Measurement of Birefringence

Nature, 1967
THE measurement of optical anisotropy is more difficult in photoelastic analysis than in other fields because of the variation in the birefringence from point to point. In addition, in three dimensional “frozen” systems the relative retardation is at most a few wavelengths, frequently less than one, and a discrimination of 0.01 wavelength can produce ...

Precision measurement of modal birefringence of highly birefringent fibers by periodic lateral force

Applied Optics, 1985
Modal birefringence of highly birefringent fibers can be measured nondestructively by the elastooptic modulation method. Based on this modulation method, a new method for precisely measuring the wavelength dependence of modal birefringence in highly birefringent fibers is presented using an incoherent light source such as a fiber Raman laser.

Two-dimensional measurement technique for birefringence vector distributions: measurement principle

Applied Optics, 1999
The two-dimensional measurement principle for a birefringence vector distribution in transparent materials is analyzed. The system nonuniformity that results from the system components makes the two-dimensional measurement principle quite different from that of a point-measurement method, and the measurement principle requires a two-dimensional ...

Birefringence dispersion measurement by geometric phase

SPIE Proceedings, 2002
A measurement method of birefringence dispersion by geometric phase is described. The measurement system consists of a polarizer, a quarter wave plate, a rotating analyzer and a spectrometer. The detected intensity by a spectrometer changes sinusoidaly along wave number. A phase shifting method is applied to analyze birefringence dispersion.

Variation in optical disk birefringence measurements

Joint International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 1999, 1999
Optical disc birefringence affects playback performance in a variety of ways and is routinely measured as part of the manufacturing process. However, many disc manufacturers have observed significant variation in birefringence measurements when using commercially available instrumentation.

Temperature measurements using a birefringent sensor

Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics, 1995
An optical method for temperature measurements is proposed based on the use of an autocollimation polarimeter and a sensitive birefringent plate. The basic expressions that describe the operation of the system are presented. It is shown that with the use of a quartz plate 1.5 mm thick the device makes it possible to determine values of temperature in ...

Direct interferometric measurement of streaming birefringence

Rheologica Acta, 1983
The two refractive indices in the flow of a colloidal birefringent liquid are measured separately by means of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. For a quantitative evaluation of the resulting interferograms it is not necessary to linearize the respective equations relating the refractive index distribution to the deformation velocity in the flow. Therefore

Matrix analysis of electric birefringence measurements

Optics Communications, 1986
Jones matrix calculus for polarized light is used to derive some general properties of cascades of optical retarders. The obtained results are applied to the analysis of electric birefringence experiments on liquids. Our calculations suggest a simple correction method for the effect of stress-induced birefringence on the cell windows.

Compact methods for measuring stress birefringence

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
The recent development of channelled spectropolarimetry presents opportunities for spectropolarimetric measurements of dynamic phenomena in a very compact instrument. We present measurements of stress-induced birefringence in an ordinary plastic by both a reference rotating-compensator fixed-analyzer polarimeter and a channelled spectropolarimeter. The
