Numerical Simulations of the Geospace Response to the Arrival of an Idealized Perfect Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2021
Previously, Tsurutani and Lakhina (2014, https://doi.org/10.1002/2013GL058825) created estimates for a “perfect” interplanetary coronal mass ejection and performed simple calculations for the response of geospace, including dB/dt.

Plasma flow channels at the dawn/dusk polar cap boundaries: momentum transfer on old open field lines and the roles of IMF By and conductivity gradients [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2009
Using DMSP F13 data in conjunction with IMF data we investigate the newly discovered channels of enhanced (1.5–3 km/s) antisunward convection occurring at the dawn (06:00–09:00 MLT) or dusk (15:00–18:00 MLT) flanks of the polar cap for different ...

Investigation of energy transport and thermospheric upwelling during quiet magnetospheric and ionospheric conditions from the studies of low- and middle-altitude cusp [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2015
We investigate energy fluxes and small, kilometre-scale Birkeland currents in the magnetospheric cusp at a 1–3 Earth radii altitude and in the ionosphere using satellites when they were, according to the Tsyganenko model, in magnetic conjunction ...

Electrodynamic context of magnetopause dynamics observed by magnetospheric multiscale

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
Magnetopause observations by Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) and Birkeland currents observed by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment are used to relate magnetopause encounters to ionospheric electrodynamics.

Contribution of Birkeland Currents to the Earth’s distant magnetic field

Birkeland currents in the plasma sheet [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2003
Geotail particle and magnetic field measurements were combined to generate long‐term‐averaged 3‐D models of the plasma sheet. Ampere's law was used to calculate the Birkeland current j∥ in the −30 < x < −16RE, ∣z∣ > 1RE region. Current diversion, or the growth of current in a unit flux tube j∥/B, took place throughout the region studied.

Polar cap flow channel events: spontaneous and driven responses [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2010
We present two case studies of specific flow channel events appearing at the dusk and/or dawn polar cap boundary during passage at Earth of interplanetary (IP) coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) on 10 January and 25 July 2004.

Determination of vertical profiles of shell currents in the ionosphere [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae
In previous works, we found Euler potentials for the combined magnetic field of Earth's dipole, field-aligned currents, ring current, and the magnetopause surface currents (represented by Dungey's term) in the magnetosphere.

Investigating Potential Causes for the Prediction of Spurious Magnetopause Crossings at Geosynchronous Orbit in MHD Simulations

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2023
During intense geomagnetic storms, the magnetopause can move in as far as geosynchronous orbit, leaving the satellites in that orbit out in the magnetosheath.

Extended period of polar cap auroral display: auroral dynamics and relation to the IMF and the ionospheric convection [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 1995
An unusually extended period (5 h) of polar cap auroral display on 3 August 1986 is examined. Auroras have been investigated using ground-based data as well as measurements from the IMP-8 spacecraft in interplanetary space and simultaneous ...
