Measurement of Auroral Birkeland Currents

Results are presented for measurements of the auroral current made with a rocket-borne experiment over Fort Churchill, Canada, during the February-May period in 1968. Large wood delivered by avalanches organizes into blanket or transport jam complexes.Jam complexes increase channel width and promote pool and bar formation. Avalanche frequency and magnitude, which are dependent on hillslope angle and roughness characteristics, controls jam complex type.

Abstract A polar cap patch was observed to exit the polar cap to become a blob as it entered the auroral oval on the nightside of the Earth under moderately quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp = 3−). Auroral particle precipitation led to an increase in the electron density of the blob.
