Dawn‐Side Anomaly in Sudden Geomagnetic Field Responses to Solar Wind Pressure Discontinuities During the 10 May and 10 October 2024 Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Interactions of solar wind dynamic pressure (SWDP) discontinuities with Earth's magnetosphere cause geomagnetic Sudden Commencements (SCs). Typically, positive/negative SCs occur at low latitudes due to enhancements/reductions in SWDP.

Origin of the cusp Birkeland currents

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1989
We argue that the cusp‐region field‐aligned (Birkeland) currents, first reported by Iijima and Potemra [1976b], arise from the motion of reconnected open field lines shortening over the dayside magnetopause. Initially, field tension is dominant so the open field lines have a significant east/west component to their motion.

Observations of large‐scale Birkeland currents with Viking

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1987
The Viking spacecraft carries a high‐resolution Magnetic Field Experiment that acquires approximately 53 vector samples per second. It has four automatically switchable ranges from ±1024 to ±65,536 nT (full scale) and resolutions commensurate with a 13 bit A/D converter in each range (±0.125 to ±8 nT).

Validation of AMPERE Magnetic Perturbations Using Swarm

open access: yesSpace Weather
The Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) provides continuous global maps of Birkeland currents, using magnetic field perturbations (dB) obtained by calibrating and detrending data from engineering magnetometers ...

A new theory of sources of Birkeland currents [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
An approach to collisionless plasma shows the existence of current orthogonal to B along the low latitude boundary layer of the magnetosphere driven by electric field which is orthogonal to both B and the layer. In this case relationship P perpendicular + (sq B/8 pi) - (sq epsilon E perpendicular/8 pi) = constant holds on a line orthogonal to B and the
